Alpina B3 GT touring, quite possibly my last new car...
Discussion
NOTE: This thread will be posted on a few other forums so some of the content may not be related to this forum.
Where to begin?
The journey which has lead to this car has been a long one so rewind back to 2019 and I was in a fortunate position that I could purchase my first ever new car. I have been a major Alpina fan for a long time and had at that point owned a few older Alpinas including a couple of E46 B3's, an E46 B3 3.0 and an E34 B10 BiTurbo so the dream of being able to order and spec a new Alpina to my taste had become a reality!
With the realisation that the F31 3 series touring production was coming to an end, that also meant the then current Alpina B3S was also about to end and that even back then, it was possible that it could be the last ever 3 series Alpina touring.
I got in contact with Sytner Harold wood as I had a good mate and former colleague working there as a senior tech and he introduced me to a salesman there called Robbie Buckle. Robbie explained that there were no more build slots available for the F31 B3S but there was a cancelled order which had been specced but not built and that it would be the very last RHD B3S touring and that if I was interested, it could be mine. The spec was good on the car, pretty much fully optioned bar heated rear seats which I would have specced and it was in a colour I liked, Alpina green but the interior colour was not something I would have chosen being beige, not the worst colour by any means but not what I would have chosen and as the car, which I had been told had not been built yet, so if that was the case, I knew that it was spec changeable.
To cut a long story short, it transpired that the car had been built and there was no way of changing anything on it so I decided I could not compromise on a car that expensive and potentially a "forever" car so I pulled out of the deal and my holding deposit returned to me.

That left me deciding to put the idea of a new car on hold for a while and at the time my daily was E92 B3 Biturbo which I was enjoying a lot, improving it along the way. Thread below.

Fast forward to Jan 2020 and a road test in a customers F82 M4 got me thinking about them and that the F82 production would be coming to an end soon so the new car idea was back in my mind and an order was placed.

Later that year Alpina announced that a B3 Biturbo would be released based on the now current G2x 3 series saloon and touring with its premier of an Alpina green touring at the Frankfurt motorshow.

In early 2021 that very car started doing the rounds at UK Sytner dealers including Harold Wood where Robbie invited me to come and have a look.

Seeing it in person it looked great and I was really keen to see what it drove like and for that I had to wait till March 2021 when Sytner HW had organised an Alpina "drive day" which I got an invite to try one out for an hour, local to the dealer which was #074.

An hours drive around Essex was enough to capture my interest but not enough to make a decision whether I would be happy to replace my M4 with one.
Fast forward to August and I had #074 again but on demo for a few days in the Brecon Beacons to get a proper feel for it.

I was sold. Whilst not being my choice of colours, the car was epic and I knew I had to own one so when back at Sytner HW, we went over specs, colours etc and I placed an initial deposit for which would have been a pre LCI car.
Around the same time the wife and I were weighing up whether to stay in our current home and renovate it or sell up and buy somewhere done, I was in the latter camp as I knew going through the whole house build thing would be a ball ache but the wife won and we ended up staying but that meant I had to pull out of the B3 order for now as these things tend to have a habbit of spiralling, which it did and then some. Obviously!
So life with the M4 continued happily for the next few years, some epic road trips, track days were had and it was a car I really enjoyed but I did find myself using it less and less on the road and I began to want to take it to the next level and build it to "clubsport" spec for track work but it was to nice and rare to do that to it and as the house build thing was coming to an end, in July 2024 I parted ways with the M4.
In the month leading up to the sale of the M4, it was announced that the G2x 3 series would receive a second but minor facelift, LCI2 if you like and this got my spidey senses going as I thought there may be another version of the B3 released before Alpina stop making cars at the end of 2025 before the hand over of the Alpina brand to BMW.
Would it be another B3S like with previous generations or would be it a GT like the last 5 series based B5 GT final editions? Whatever It was going to be I wanted one so made the call to Robbie at HW and asked for a build slot whatever it transpired to be.

The spy shots started doing the rounds heightening anticipation......

.....until the B3 and B4 GT moddels were announced and the press photos and details started to be released. The GT gained useful bump in high rpm torque but still the same peak of 730NM of the outgoing LCI B3 and an increase from 495hp to 529hp, (the pre LCI B3 having 462hp) plus detailed revisions to the chassis and aero, various GT specific details and standardising of cost options on the previous LCI B3 such as the 20" classic wheels, the metal shift paddles and the high performance brake system.
My order was accepted and placed toward the end of July 2024 and then begun the waiting game.

As part of the order I had specified a Lavalina 2 interior, this being the highest specification of Alpinas Lavalina leather interior which offers a lot more flexibilty and customisation over what BMW individual offer these days plus Lavalina leather is of a higher quality over the BMW merino leather.

I had in my mind what I wanted to achieve with various different details and I feared that something may get lost in translation when ordering through the BMW UK Sytner process so I requested a visit to Buchloe to have a personal consultation as advised on their website in the link above. I was initially denied this but in the end my request was granted and at the beginning of September 2024, my oldest son an I drove E46 B3 3.3 saloon #450 which I was dallying at the time, down to Bavaria to visit family and to pay a visit to Buchloe where I got to see the Brewster green touring #001 and go over the details of the model followed by a very constructive consultation over the Lavalina plus a small tour of the workshop and saddlery.
A visit to the Alpina factory in Buchloe is something I have always wanted to so for me this was something else!
And then the real wait began.....

So they advise a trip to see them but initially said naaah.
Whut? Sounds like it really helped that you got there!
Historically Alpina have alway been very helpful but with the sale of the Alpina brand to BMW and its transition period, a lot will be going on behind the scenes which can limit availability for such things.Whut? Sounds like it really helped that you got there!

I have had a 2020 D3 S for a couple years now so still the pre-LCI version. Brilliant car, and it looks the part anywhere be it the Alps or Tesco
The D3 S are great cars and arguably the better all rounder for mile munching and everyday use. What colour combo and spec is yours?
During the visit to Alpina it was explained that despite the car being built at BMW fairly soon, there would be a wait until the Lavalina interior could be completed due to the increased demand with various orders being made in the run up to the end of new Alpina orders before the brand take over.
This resulted in my car being built on the 23rd September 2024 but work in the saddlery could not begin until Jan/Feb 2025 which to be fair worked out ok for me timing wise and would be ideal for the new '25' reg from the 1st March so a six month wait it was, which to be fair, I had last time with my M4 with it having individual paint and a factory closure right at the start of Covid!
When the DVLA released the new '25' plates to order, I chose a plate befitting of the car and my inner Alpina geek for it to be first registered with,
GT25OAL.
For those not au fait with all things Alpina, the GT part is pretty obvious with the B3 being of the GT variant and the OAL is a nod to the German licence plate area codes of which OAL is for the Ostallgäu district of Bavaria where Alpina are based in Buchloe with all of their press cars bearing the OAL designation on their licence plate (usually followed by a variation of the model designation).
The OAL is of that much significance to Alpina they even partly named their 50 year book after it.

Above, press car B3GT touring #001 (as seen earlier) with OAL (the area) B3 (the model) 529 (the PS rating for the B3GT)
It's not the first time I have gone full Alpina geek with an OAL plate....

My old E92 B3 Biturbo wore B1 OAL most of the time I owned it with a nod to it being a BI turbo but I digress.....
March the 1st 2025 rolled around and there was a delay. Panicking a bit about the impending new car tax hike due from the beginning of April (thanks Rachael Reeves!) I got the call that my car would be landing and registered just in time so on Friday 28th March the wife and I along with my eldest son, hopped on the train to Essex where Robbie picked us up from Harold wood station in a new G90 M5 (not a fan of its looks inside or out!).

After the "big reveal" I began to take in all the details for the first time. Blown away!

For the BMW geeks, the full set of options codes above but to surmise, the standard spec iof the B3 GT s pretty good but I'll explain some of the more important options and why I chose them.
Panoramic sunroof, its a road car not a race car and I like then sun and open top driving.
Harman Kardon audio, I like my music, and while HK isn't great, it's better than the base audio.
High beam assist and adaptive LED headlights, because they work great at night and I drive in the sticks a lot.
Acoustic glazing, because I like the extra refinement having had double glazing in previous E39's.
Parking assistance plus, I like the surround view and the package helps with parking in a garage.
Head up display, I find it helpful when 'on it'.
Driving assistant professional, helpful for when stuck in stop start motorway traffic.
Black grills (!) Shock horror, but I felt the black grills work better with all the other back B3 GT specific items such as the canards, rear diffuser, tail pipes and G2x LCI lower front grill.
A few of those options you could argue they take away the "spirit of driving" but I like the adaptability of the car so adding to that ads to the appeal.
Some of the details.....

Oro tecnico, Alpina speak for satin gold adorns the badges, wheels, deco stripes, strut braces and shift paddles.

Along with the usual "dashboard" plaque with its build number, the GT gets an additional numbered engine bay plaque baring Alpina's founder, Burkard Bovensiepen signature along with sons Andreas and Florian.

A nice GT keyring finished in black Lavalina with Oro tecnico stitching.
The paint colour in case you were wondering is P9R Anglesey green. Anglesey green is a replacement for P7T Verde Ermes, which is a Lamborghini colour, and the colour of my previous M4. Both individual paint colours and from what I have heard, Lamborghini didn't want BMW using their colour any more so BMW had to come up with their own version.
This could be a load of crap but I have heard similar with Ferrari Rosso Corsa.
Anywhoo, why Verde Ermes again, sorry Anglesey green?
There were other paint colour combos I did consider, Mora over Champagne, Sepia Violet over Champagne, Daytona Violet over Champagne, Mauritius Blue over champagne...... thats a lot of champagne! But no Alpina Green or Alpina blue? As great as those signature colours are, I wanted to try (there is no guarantee) and own a "one of one" car.
I love a green car and the Verde Ermes always had a positive reaction from people who had no interest in cars to full on car geeks, plus I loved the colour.
So Anglesey green it was along with.....?

That’s looking fantastic, Barry, as do you out of your overalls! Great spec!
It’s going to be something like Caramel inside, isn’t it? Looks lighter than cognac. Whatever, that could just be a forever car! Looking forward to hearing, and seeing more of the GT. Congrats!

A few people managed to drool over this car the weekend before last - truly stunning in bright sunshine and a fabulous colour combination #no spoilers
If I did have one gripe about modern Alpinas and this is no way directed at the OP it is the absence of any dish on the wheels...
