Opportunity Knocks Clapometer

I am in the process of organising a charity amateur talent contest
I had the 'brilliant' idea of deciding the winner along the lines of using an opportunity knocks style clapometer , but my internet research has not thrown up much detail of what was shown to viewers. I recall a clockface sort of dial & linear meter. But can't find many images of them in action.
I know the results shown on the original one was all down to the operators judgement, but I'd like to add some 21st century objectivity. Cheapness is the key so any ideas other than a decibel phone app would be appreciated.
Also, I recall that the applause was 'measured' after each act & then again at the end after the audience had seen all acts perform. However my wife says the clapometer was only shown at the end. Please tell me which is right.

What about one of these large red LED ones? £30 to £50 so not cheap but not crazily expensive (and you could maybe resell it afterwards to recoup some money).
