1991 Audi 100 Avant (C3) 2.0E 5 cylinder
Discussion
My new beast arrived!
It's a big ugly boat, when I saw it I knew we were meant to be. I've been driving the Citi Golf for a few years and it's brilliant, but loud not super comfortable on long long journeys. Time for a change, I've gone completely the other way.
2 litre 5 cylinder engine which sounds brilliant, nice rally burble. The ride is so smooth and nothing rattles, they were put together very well - everything feels heavy and strong, quite a change from my budget hot hatches
It's deceptively brisk too despite not being impressive on paper (c. 115bhp, 130ftlb)
It's a manual which seems quite rare, it's a nice gearbox.
Lots of things don't work so it'll be a nice project. Electric windows need some attention, sunroof doesn't work, door handles getting sticky. But all the important bits (paint, engine, gearbox) are glorious.
I have an original brochure, full history (it's been well loved) and manuals etc. The colour is Stone Grey and the interior is 'Quartz'.
I'm a bit unclear on the models and their names (CD vs E vs CC) but I'll work it out.
Has the original dealer plates, and was serviced by that dealer on the Isle of Wight for 15 years before being sold (and has spent it's whole life on the Isle!).

How many left tells me there are about 15 left on the road, and 3 in this configuration (2.0 engine).

Love the C3 avant, well done for finding that. My uncle had one exactly like that I remember, I am sure it was the same colour as well. It was badged as CC, not too sure what it meant at the time.
They just seem to have an understated elegance that we just don't see nowadays on Audi's (or any other car really). The last few A6 Avants just look so angry.
Lovely car, please keep us updated.

I remember one on my walk to school and was fascinated by it. The flush windows and flush door handles you knew it was engineered different - considering my cul-de-sac still had Cortinas and Triumph Acclaims!
Even the Sierra, a car ridiculed for being the jelly mould, still had clumsy windows and roof gutters.
I got the brochure as a kid and engineering was one of the biggest selling points in that publication - explaining techniques like galvanisation and the procon-ten wire rope safety system.
It crystalised in my mind everything that Audi stood for.
Fantastic to see.

I had an Audi 100 C3, would have been one of the first from 1983. So smooth and comfortable, and yes as above the engineering, 0.30cd etc. was obviously superior.
Kept it going for many years beyond any economic sense but was finally defeated by an "unusual" ?Konig carburettor, not on all of them apparently, that couldn't be fixed.

Congratulations - that is fantastic. I remember these well and the motoring press raved about them at the time.
The design was so modern, as were the distinctive headrests, and the - from memory - lightly tinted green windows.
Funny to think of large saloons like that being manual these days, but in the 1980/90s it was very much the default until you moved towards Mercedes and Jaguar territory.

Good to see, congratulations on the purchase and hope it serves you well!
This must be quite a late one as my ol' man got the next shape in Dec 91 - a J reg 100 2.8E manual in Tornado red. Must dig out a photo!
Thanks! It was registered at the end of May 1991 so will be one of the last ones before they moved to the C4 (which I think is what your dad would have had?). This must be quite a late one as my ol' man got the next shape in Dec 91 - a J reg 100 2.8E manual in Tornado red. Must dig out a photo!

I actually have a brochure! Some pics for you...Even the Sierra, a car ridiculed for being the jelly mould, still had clumsy windows and roof gutters.

Also have the original dealer keyring which I rather like too.

The Audi 100 tv advertisement from 1983 is one of my all time favourite car adverts
It's on youtube ( but I'm too technologically inept to link it)
PS I really like your new motor

We ran one as a works hack when I worked for an online car importer. It was dark blue and LHD. Biggest problem we getting it UK registered, because the market it came from (which may have been Belgium, can't remember) didn't require the fitment of side repeater indicators. To get it MoT's we had to drill into the wings, fit some indicators and wire them in. It was a super thing to drive, not quick but quiet and comfortable, just as the OP states.
I had one in that exact spec, expect was a saloon. Same colour, same wheels, same interior and same engine.
Loved that car, felt massive in the nineties but almost dainty now, you are right about the engine, I bought it and expected it to be slow but it went well. A friend had a 2.0 Audi 80 at the time and I expected the 100 to be much slower but there was nothing in it.
Mine was an SE, first car I had with aircon, though it failed after a year or so.
Nearly bought later model 100 with a V6 auto but it left me cold, always fancied a 200 or V8.

Takes me back to my apprenticeship when the boss ran one of them , was quite rare even then compared to Sierras and Cavaliers , he had 2 and the first one was solid brown on a B plate which sounds horrific but was actually quite nice ,then a sort of blue /green metallic but can’t see any of these colours in the brochure.
Actually thinking about it this will be a later car so the colours may have been dropped..!
