I got caught on a yellow box junction then noticed as it cleared a marked police car in the lane next to me. The cops were smiling and talking, I did not get pulled over.

Has made me wonder though, do marked cars (even unmarked) have to stop you and issue paperwork for any offence they see, or could the police just note my number and send the fine by post?

(I am thinking the times a car notices your mistake, not speed traps)

Yellow box offences, as well as parking, etc, are decriminalised and now dealt with by local councils.

I doubt that the police officers in the car next to you even noticed you.

They don't have to do anything about it if they don't want to, and they probably won't.

Can still give a ticket.

I've done two I think in 15 years. Normally just give words of advice through the window.

That is what I expected - that yes, the police could get involved but would perhaps be a tad more understanding than a camera as to how the error was made.

They probably were more interested in completing their assigned work for the day, assuming they weren't traffic.

On a similar note, a couple of days ago I was walking towards a zebra crossing, the police car on my side of the road stopped and I started to proceed and got 2 steps across and stopped as I noticed the car on the other side approaching at speed, they ploughed through the crossing waving their hand. The police officer did nothing. If I'm not mistaken, that is a easy 3 points and a £100 fine, if not careless driving.

How do you know they did nothing? Could have got it on dashcam, so they had all the evidence they needed.

Alternatively the officer could have been going to court or going to take a statement etc at an arranged time.

Not everything is as it first appears.
