..know it's been discussed before, but wondering if there is any new advice on how to insure multiple vehicles - daily and classics, noting that I can only drive one at a time? Anything akin to insuring the person vs individual cars?

Thanks

There are policies that do this usually called something like "family fleet". Multiple cars; multiple drivers; each can have different cover; etc; etc

The likes of Admiral and Direct Line both offer multi car policies although they may have maximum numbers of cars.
If the “ fleet “ is more esoteric then you may want to speak with a broker who will do all the work for you.
A Plan ( now Howdens ) ( Thatcham office ) are pretty decent or depending on the Classic make up the likes of Footman James etc get decent reviews.
If the overall sum insured is chunky then a HNW Insurer such as Chubb or ZPC are worth talking to but neither will be cheap - both can be accessed through brokers - Nowell and Richards have always been good for me.

On the basis that you will generally be specifying an annual mileage for each car, don't know that the fact that you can only drive one at a time makes that much difference. Then cars obviously need to have relevant cover when they are not being driven.

Don’t bother unless you want to spend ages rebroking every car at the same time each year.

You’ll get a great rate on the first year, then higher in future so you’ll still need to do the annual comparison site rigmarole to check.

I have been with Admiral multicar for many years, every year at renewal I search for individual cars and every year without fail their renewal is cheaper than I can get individual policies for.

I then call and moan and make up a figure that I've managed to come to and they'll knock hundreds off over and above the renewal so they massively undercut the alternatives. Same cover too, zero voluntary excess and very small compulsory. I added the house insurance too and it got even cheaper.

Not a particularly exotic fleet, but two of them are >500bhp cars.

Another vote for Nowell and Richards. They sort out all my car and house insurance. Not the cheapest but you know if you need to claim there won’t be an issue.

Which is exactly why you could use a broker.
I get one email detailing the terms for renewal for which I either accept if I think the renewal price is acceptable or ask them to shop it around.
This year the renewal price has increased by more than what I thought reasonable but the broker had already said they were seeking alternatives and asking the Insurer to think again.

Hagerty are amazing covering a collection of cars ranging from 1926 to 2012.
The newer ones are unusual and not regular use vehicles - youngtimers

we used Admiral for Ford Capri mk2 3000
Mitsubishi Outlander
Aston Martin DBS 2010

on a multi car policy

thought that was a good quote with agreed valuations for the Capri and Aston

No Insurer or Broker will work well for everyone as our cars, postcodes and driving histories are all different.

Admiral Multicar works well for some, and other find individual policies cheaper.

Family fleets work for some, and not others

My caveat with Admiral is their appalling Standard Parts Replacement Clause and having experienced their less than satisfactory claims service.

The chairman of a company I was CFO of a few years ago had c100 cars under a single policy with multiple drivers. Some were insured to drive all the vehicles, others just for a handful of cars.

If I recall the annual premium was something like £36,000 which I thought was reasonable for eight people across 90 classics with an agreed value of c£15m AND their fleet or Range rovers they had as dailies.

I'll see if I can dig out the information from someone I know who still works there.

Indeed.
Your last point also highlights that it isn't just about seeing how cheap you can get the premium and then necessarily expecting the finest claims service.
Its always difficult to value the hassle factor especially when you of course don't know if or when you will even need to claim.
Admiral multicar also worked very well for my 3 children , one of whom I persuaded to run the policy as administrator so my hassle factor was finally reduced to zero.Their portal is also pretty decent if that's important to you.

For me a decent broker is the only answer.

We do 11 cars, all any driver, mods are free and we're both fully comprehensive on anything we don't own.

Admiral and the likes don't even come close.

Heard some horror stories regarding admiral when clients put claims in. Do they still have a cap on the value of each vehicle they are willing to insure?

We use footman james. Price comparison to admiral and direct line (used both previously) is good, especially with two of the cars being a bit tricky to get things like agreed values on. Have a land cruiser, mini cooper s, e30 and db6 on one policy. one renewal date is handy as well. only downside was ageus - the underwriter was tricky to work with when my wife had a claim on the mini last year.

We use LV for a multi-car policy for two drivers, 3 cars. Cover appears to be really good, better than Admiral.

I only have 2 cars, but every time I have tried getting quotes for multi-car cover one has been very competitive and the other one has been ridiculous so I just carry on with 2 separate policies.

It spreads the cost too!

I've just insured 5 cars last week. Much modified 410 brake Evo 8, Mk1 MR2 with 6 speed box, Porsche Boxster 3.2S, Lexus IS300 Sportcross and the only newish thing, and the most expensive to insure in isolation, a 2018 Ford Connect.

£1360 all in with Howdens. Has to be through their Thatcham branch, the others don't specialise in modified cars.
