I'm doing more biking weekends in a camper with a garage

My wife would like to come but doesn't want to sit in a campsite all weekend and doesn't want to drive a LWB van so I'm thinking I could throw a scooter in the back and she could ride that locally

As we're old am I correct that she doesn't need to do a CBT to ride a 50cc or can pass the CBT and ride a 125 for 2 years ?

Anything else to consider (she won't want a bicycle)

If your wife passed her car test before Feb 2001 she can ride a 50cc on L plates without a CBT. It would be a good idea to have her do one and be able to ride a 125 ish. A Honda Vision 110 scooter can broadly keep up with traffic. A 50cc can't and is dangerously slow.

My partner has a Honda PCX125 and it’s a great little thing, for what it is. Light, easy to ride, responsive controls, will just touch 70mph, while comfortably cruising at 60mph. It does 120mpg and costs buttons to service. You’ll also easily sell it when the time comes, as they’re incredibly popular with the Deliveroo/Just Eat types.

Highly recommended!

The PCX 125 is a cracking machine for what it is

PCX is brilliant, but back of a camper van I'd go lighter and air cooled for more simplicity too. Honda Vision 110, or a Honda Dax 125 (no clutch, but semi auto and 2 seater). Both of those barely crack 100kg

Mrs Sternhammer has a Suzuki Address 110. Its as quick as any 125 scoot and has the added bonus of having a lighter weight but larger wheels. The larger wheels do make a difference to stability. They also tend to be a little cheaper as most folk only want a 125.

Basically spot on, as are all the responses!
I would recommend to check her licence for the entitlement, rather than assume based on the date of her test. DVSA make mistakes!
She needs Category AM, without a 122 entry in the restriction column.

Thanks

I looked into the options and she's not keen frown I'm tempted to buy one and try again, I'm sure she'll love pootling around the lanes

I doubt she'd go over 30mph but agree a bigger engine is nicer to ride

I'm shocked at the mileage many scooters have managed, loads of 125cc and below are over 50k some over 100k

Yet when 1000+cc motorcycles are being sold with 30k+ people reject them for being high mileage biglaugh

Considering the absolute abuse they get, high revving nature plus undoubted lack of maintenance beyond the first or second service, it’s even more impressive!

^^^ Agreed !

As she's a bit nervous would a Tricity 125 be the way to go ?

It would make putting a wheel on the gravel of the lanes less worrying and presumably reduce stopping distances

I bought Mrs Airsafari a 125cc Vespa for her to do her CBT on and start riding on the rode.

Previously she had had a bad experience at another training school many years prior, but had always wanted to do her CBT again.

She loved riding it and kept riding it for the next 3 years before doing her full licence.

She’s since had a 660 Tuono and now has a Ducati Scrambler and we still have a 250cc Vespa in the garage now.

Just take the leap and get her one, chances are she will love it.

Just get her a decent pedal e-bike she’ll probably way prefer that to a scooter

She won't ride a bicycle - I bought one for her 10+ years ago

No chance of getting her on a a Tuono either frown

Really? 15.5 mph top speed whilst pedalling is preferable to a nice 125 twist and go? A minority view I'd say.
