I'm meeting up with a groups old mates for a long weekend in Hamburg in a few weeks time. We will six forty-something years old who are partial to a drink, staying in the St. Pauli district. Anyone got any good tips or recommendations?

I'm going in a few weeks, if you do nothing else book tickets for Miniature Wunderland, right in the centre, by far the World's largest model railway / airport / docks / etc.

Website is a bit tricky to navigate but it's just the base ticket you want, not the VR malarky.

Thanks, but I don't think that'll pass muster with my lot. I was thinking more along the lines of brewery tours, decent guided pub crawls, etc.

I'm fluent in German so there's no language barrier issues (notwithstanding any regional dialect ones!).

mpressive and geeky in equal measure, and a must see when in Hamburg
https://www.miniatur-wunderland.de/

Its located in the historical part of HafenCity, which is worth a stroll (weather permitting)

Sternschanze is the hipster/bohemian area and worth an afternoon or evening for some alternative bars, cafes and restaurants. By the underground station you have Ratsherrn Braugasthaus as an ideal place to start for a few beers.

Rote Flora is an iconic landmark in Sternschanze, head there next and grab a beer in a nearby bar. St Pauli is a walkable distance from here, which is what we did while stopping off for a quick beer at anywhere that looked interesting.

Hans-Albers-Platz is a very lively but not so seedy square/area in the Reeperbahn full of small pubs. Herbertstraße is a few streets away which I'm sure you walk down by mistake...

Hamburger Berg is another busy street with pubs etc.

Große Freiheit is the notorious nightlife street, go for a beer etc but Eastern Europe rules apply to the stripclubs.

We went last month - just did the usual wander around and fall into the next bar type approach.

Any football fans tho?

We went to a Friday night match for Hamburger SV - second tier football but a huge stadium, 58k capacity, full. Flares, pyro, drummers.

Awesome experience.

The Old Fish Market on Sunday morning used to have a market, food stalls, rock music, beer and trestle tables.
This was a few years ago so do your own research to see if it’s still going on.

For a lads trip, don’t forget the Reeperbahn.

I mentioned a few famous streets/areas just off the Reeperbahn that seemed to have a much higher concentration of pubs and bars. The Reeperbahn main road seemed to be hotels, casino's, concert halls and a few bigger mainstream bars. (Along with the odd ropey stribclub and sex shop)

I will always remember the first bar we went into on Große Freiheit that was run by Romanians. I ordered 3 beers, the owner informed my mate he had cocaine for sale and the barmaid told me 20 minutes with her will cost €70 laugh

If you want to eat in Sternschanze, book or miss out - it's always rammed.
