Hey folks....

Looking for a little advice! Currently have a 2yr old and twins on the way so looking for a 7 seater we can get 3 car seats in middle row.

i stress all advice welcome, but so far i've really just found the Q7 and 5008 to be the best in the SUV market

Anyone had either?

I know the 5008 is a wetbelt and most likely suffers from some issues?

Q7 is prob my ideal choice but really don't want to drop more than 30k max on a car at the moment, which years are good etc?

any if anyone has other ideas feel free to say!

Ex wife has had a 5008 from new for new for 3 years. It's been ok but loads of electrical gremlins and things like the radar cruise works when it feels like it.

It's from a good class or two down from a Q7 in terms of engine size, weight, NVH, ride etc and will likely be much less costly to run long term if you change the oil for the RIGHT SPEC at half intervals. If you're looking at proper long term ownership, so the car is over a decade old and still yours, then bear in mind that nothing outside of proper exotica will sodomize your wallet for so little joy in return like a middle aged VAG car.

Previously she had a 2016 XC60 and before that a V70 and you could get three child seats across the back of those. She liked the XC60 a lot more than the 5008 and you can get a really nice 2016 on ULEZ compliant D5 for £10k now. If you avoid the four pot FWD D4 you'll have very few running headaches with one and £20k change from your budget to buy yourself something you actually want to own wink

Don’t buy an expensive premium German car if you can’t afford the running cost and bills of an expensive German car, even tyres are expensive.

Had the same criteria albeit a larger budget a couple of years ago. Q7 was the only thing that ticked all the boxes.

It's a really, really good car and has caused no problems whatsoever. Guy above is right though, tyres aren't cheap.

Hi, great advice, not really worried about the cost of tyres or brakes.

Currently have a Ranger, CX5 and Ford custom, really it will be her car and wont do much more than 6k a year.... but for the inevitable family trip id like to make a decent choice.

biggest issue is 3 under 3 all in isofix car seats and a twin pram to cart about!

Have you considered an E55 estate and a 7 seat conversion kit?

I've not tried to put 3 Isofix across the middle but would imagine it'll fit, would be a squeeze though. Q7 has 2 decent seats in the boot and a folding double pram would fit with them up, definitely with only one of them up, but there's not a huge amount of space for much else.

I bought a SQ7 last year (man-maths justified it over a normal Q7!). Been a great car so far.
I have 3 kids, although a little older than yours. I think you might struggle to get 3 x Isofix in the middle row, although rear facing of the outer 2 seats may actually help.
We have 1 x Isofix seat incl base, 1 x Isofix booster and 1 x very narrow non Isofix seat in the centre and they just fit.

For 3 car seats across the row you really need 3 individual rear seats / 3 equal size rear seats. You will need the boot for combinations of double buggy, trikes, 1- 3 bikes, luggage, shopping etc. They are not fun but you don't go anywhere fast with lots of you kids in so while it may not be in your original thinking do take a closer look at be boring stuff like Galaxy, S max, Touran, Sharan, C4 Grand Picasso. The big flat boot or even the flat rear footwell with rear sliding seats in stuff like the C4 Grand Picasso is good for stuff like using a travel potty. Other things you don't notice are the built in blinds, the wider opening doors, the seat position relative to the door opening making it easier to put kids in the child seat, the sliding rear seats etc all become important.

There really isn't much on the market now, annoyingly.

The standard go to is the Citreon C5 Aircross, which is the SUV replacement for the C4 Grand Picasso / Spacetourer. Alternatively, there is the MPV style Touran or the van based models (Peugeot Rifter, Citreon Berlingo, Vauxhall Combo Life)

Older options include SMax, Galaxy, Toyota Verso, Kia Carens.

Three kids is expensive / boring lol

The 1.6 5008 doesn't have a wet belt. They're a rare find, but are out there.

We were in the same situation as you when living in Germany and ended up in a Q7 etron. Was superb for the task. The only thing I would mention is that once you've got the double buggy in the boot, even in a Q7 there isn't loads of boot left. After a couple of years we ended up with a T6 Caravelle (and put the two middle seats in the shed), and now have an ID. Buzz. It's just so nice to be able to throw everything in the back and not have to think about packing it cleverly. You're going to have enough on your plate - van cars like this really do make it simple. Sliding doors are great for getting them in in tight car parks too.

We have 3 girls, with a 2 year gap between each of them.
A few years ago we were in the same dilemma and we found the best solution at the time was a Discovery 4, with the 3 separate seats across the middle and then the 2 full size seats in the boot, and when not in use the boot was huge!

I wasn't keen initially but we ended up keeping it for 4 years - longest time I've kept a car. £700 road tax began to hurt but a great classless do it all car, and living in the Cotswolds we could justify a 4x4....

XC90 was the other option especially as our oldest could then go in the built-in booster seat in the middle.

While it's not a wet belt the 1.6 turbo in the 5008 is the much loved "Prince" engine so famous for giving durable and trouble free service in the R56 Mini.

In other words "I'm ok, thanks" when it comes to private long term ownership. Truly dreadful engines, and they never appear to have actually fixed them because as a serial buyer of Minis (against my better judgement) I've had early ones, late ones, low mile ones, medium mile ones (there are no high mile ones) and they've all been riddled with faults.

Shame because they're nice to use when in working order, but they're definitely a new car that goes away before it gets too old engine. Ex Mrs GoL has the more powerful version (180bhp?) and it goes fine with the 8 speed auto but it'll go away and get replaced before too long.

These do do a job but they don't provide the same level of long term safety that dedicated higher spec and tested car seats do.

Grand Scenic or S-max for me, nails the brief and clearly signed off by people with kids.

I still can't get my head around why you would choose an SUV over an MPV in this scenario...

Most women wouldnt be seen dead driving an MPV. SUV is undoubtedly what the market desires.
