Side and back sleeper who has become sensitive to mattresses with age. Bought an expensive medium-firm hybrid one in 2021 which was spot-on until about a month ago when I suddenly started waking up every night with chronic upper back pain, like a dull ache between the shoulder blades. Rotated it, no difference.

Thinking it's too firm, tried adding a memory foam topper which didn't solve the problem.

Tried sleeping in the spare bed which is softer, but think it's too soft - woke up in similar pain.

Tried thicker and thinner pillows.

Am able to sleep ok on the sofa, which is in-between the two beds in terms of firmness.

So it is simply a case of getting a medium mattress? Bit irritating after forking out 3.5 years for a new one. Should I go hybrid again, or springs only? I don't get along with memory foam.

Where did you buy it from? Do you still have the receipt? It should last longer than that! The most recent one we bought has a 7 year guarantee.

There are no obvious signs of sagging, so I assumed the change was due my aging body, not the mattress.

But I'm now coming round to the idea that it's too soft, not too firm, as I noticed the sofa offers support for my upper back area which aches after sleeping on the mattress. Or somehow the sofa is able to contour where the mattress doesn't,

Difficult stuff this mattress lark. No-one else can diagnose the problem for you.

If you've tried different beds with no luck then changing mattresses seems like an expensive way to start. Go see a physio (or similar) and see what's got stuff.
