I guess I shouldn’t be surprised…

What I bought my ratty old Panda 4x4 two years ago, I put a personal plate on it. The plate has been on several previous cars. I did it online with zero hassle or delay.

I’m selling the Panda, so I’ve just tried to take the plate off it, only to be told I can’t do it online due to the car’s previous history. Apparently it has been un-taxed in the hands of a dealer at some point in the last 5 years, which prevents me taking the plate off without a postal application. Weird how they weren’t bothered when I was putting the plate on…

So, I’ve had to access a DVLA form, print it (because it can’t be filled in on-screen), put it in an envelope, with a stamp and a cheque for £80 (first cheque I’ve written since 2018…)

Looks like I now have to wait 4 weeks, which has almost certainly cost me the sale - buyer wanted to collect this weekend….

Rant over - I guess we’ve got used to instant gratification with so much online stuff nowadays - we always had to do it by post in “the old days”…

Some similar tales here: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

It took a week for my new v5 to arrive in the post, so they turned it round fairly quickly.

It is totally unnecessary though…

+1 to it taking about a week at the moment.

You can check the Tax status of the current numberplate on the gov.uk website to confirm it has come off a couple of days prior to the revised V5 and retention certificate arriving.

I don't think I could lay hands on a cheque book!
