Anyone know if these mickey Thompson tyres are street legal in the U.K. with that tread pattern ? They are called “street/strip” after all, thanks

I think tyre legality in the UK is based solely on whether the tyres have been through the EU (strictly ECE, I think) type approval process. That tread pattern doesn't look any more sparse than many approved tyres, but that doesn't mean that particular tyre has been approved.

Ok thanks they are US imports so not sure they would have had that ?

Although do all the BF Goodrich white letter tyres that get imported have to pass these tests ?

If they're going to be used on the public road, yes.

You would think that they are OK being a subsidiary of Goodyear and sold by Mytyres et al however the advertising does mention off road a lot so best to check. Start by calling a supplier? Have you been offered a particularly good deal?

Try asking Goodyear directly. There's a contact link at the bottom of the page: https://www.goodyear.eu/en_gb/consumer/learn/eu-ti...

There are two definite ways tyres can be legal,
1. EU approval marking, or
2. Attached to a car that's been through IVA.

If you import "just tyres" and fit them to your car you're left with the the questions of whether your tyres meet UK requirements and whether your car is roadworthy. You'd also need to be sure they didn't invalidate your insurance.

I would say it is a grey area.

All tyres sold for road use in the UK/EU, must be E-marked. These will not be E-marked, but DOT marked.

Although when new, they should just about have enough tread to to pass that side of things. As to how often you'd want to drive on such tyres given how much they cost....is another matter.

And most tyres like that, even in the US will state not for road use, even though they are DOT marked to be legal for it.

What is the actual application ?

There are a few suppliers in the UK, most will probably not have stock. And it can be just as handy to order from Summit etc.

For road use, I would say these will not be good. They will not last long, and they can get tore up pretty easily. They are obviously intended for drag use.
Is it a drag application ? How much road use do you intend ?

Thanks for the reply

It’s not really a big deal that I need them it’s more for a stance/look type of thing

The 295/50/15’s that most of the BFG and cooper RWL tyres come with are too short with the 50 profile

These ones I want above are 295/65/15 which gives the car a more beefier look at the rear

It’s only a nice weather car so I don’t do many miles per year so don’t think there would be a problem in them wearing out too quick

Thanks

Again, what is the application ?

These tyres are specifically aimed at drag racing. They will be very poor around corners, they have pretty soft sidewalls, they are not an overly robust construction compared to a typical road tyre, because they are not expected to be driven over potholes, crappy roads etc etc

I believe the other poster wants to give his car a 'more beefier look' and has not considered how the tyres will perform.

He is asking what car & for what purpose in asking what application.

It is something that you should be considering when buying any tyre for any car.

Not worth fitting the best possible UHP winter tyre for a car that will be only ever used on a Fiat Panda in central Africa etc.

There's at least two classes of drag racing where the cars must be street legal, and to prove it they all go on a cruise at an event one evening, then return to the strip. Most competitors trailer their cars there but a few are driven too. Given that they'll be taking a bunch of other stuff (tools, camping gear etc) they might have room for a set of wheels/tyres but probably not, unless they had a support car/van too.
