We had one that came down in the storms, took the others down as they were all showing signs, quite scary how quickly it came down, but not surprising!

If it's dead, why would it not be?

You wouldn't prune a live tree now because the sap is rising, but if it's dead it's just wood.

We lose a few each year to as die back and generally do them about now, when the fields are drying out but before they are in full leaf (or as much leaf as they produce).

Basically, if you (or your tree surgeon) think it’s dangerous, it needs to come down regardless, or if it comes down on somebody or something you could be seen as negligent.
