New DB12 Trickle Charger
Discussion
So this is my first Aston which comes with a Trickle charger.
Hypothetically if we had driven the car all day yesterday - would you expect to see the low battery message this morning? Would driving it not have charged it up like it should be?
Or are we in Ferrrari territory where you have to do this every day?
We have only had the car 10 days
Thanks

Hi,
If you are the first owner and a brand new car that came from a dealer, it is possible the car sat still for a long enough period before your sale that the battery dropped low enough that it does not (will not) fully recover now.
I've seen this in the US with production cars where the lots are full and cars not sold for months. Suggest you take it to the selling dealer, have them check the health of the battery. I've hears many stories of batteries replaced in brand new cars.
Best,

It could also be something is draining the battery that shouldn't be. Definitely take it back to the dealer to have them check the battery, alternator, and any battery drain.
It would be a hypothetical dealer though, because the question is based on a hypothesis. Otherwise the OP would have said 'We drove the car all day yesterday and the next day we saw a low battery message'.Simpo Two said:

I thought I had misread the OP's post, whilst reading suggestions about what to do about the low battery message.
The answer to your question Stark is, no need to worry.
I connect a trickle charger if my AM has not been, or will not be driven for a fortnight.
Even that time scale is overkill, but it is a discipline that suits me.
If driven daily or once a week or even once a fortnight then ordinarily the car should not need connecting to a battery conditioner -assuming of course that there is nothing wrong with said battery, post new car standing issues etc.
If on the other hand you don't know when you will next be using - or you have multiple cars - then as Jon says putting on the conditioner may save you a world of pain should something happen.
My old Defender lives on a conditioner irrespective of being used once a week for instance.
My GT8 stays on a conditioner as only used very occasionally though.

The dealer said that the yellow battery light would sometimes come on even the next day. There are many more electrics in this car apparently than previous gens hence the need. Once it comes on in the morning we don’t see it again and it’s fine. Probably only after a cold night and in the morning so maybe the condition of the battery isn’t at its best

Personally I would at least be connecting to the conditioner for a while to see what happens then.Assuming a CTEK variation ( as supplied with the car ) once the green lights come on ( depending on model ) then take it off and see what happens the next day etc.

I am pretty sure this happened to me. My Vantage was ex demo and within two days it was throwing up random faults on the dash. The supplying dealer wasn’t that close. I was told to buy a battery conditioner, which I did the faults went away but it is always left on it when not driving. Whenever first plugged in the indicator lights on the conditioner are always low.If you are the first owner and a brand new car that came from a dealer, it is possible the car sat still for a long enough period before your sale that the battery dropped low enough that it does not (will not) fully recover now.

You might do better to give the battery a good beasting with a proper modern battery charger; I'm no expert but they have cycles that 'do stuff'.It sounds odd that it should be throwing up low battery warnings being so new and you driving it ... I know you drive your cars Nick, your previous Vantage was driven way more than most.
No matter whether I'm driving my car daily or as has been the case recently where I was away for 7 days, the car is put on a battery conditioner without fail. I did this with my previous Vantage and it lived outside for nearly 5 years and never had a fault. The magnetic quick couple is a way faster and easier way to connect things up, unlike the old fashioned way of opening the boot and removing a cover to connect via a lighter socket.

Well it’s going in to have the condition of the battery checked tomorrow - can they do this accurately after a 30 min drive there? And if an issue they will replace the battery.
Had a punctured rear tyre which was replaced - not cheap on a DB12 Volante Michelin PS5’s
Yes, they can check the condition of the battery (battery's ability to "recover" after a heavy charge to it) when you drive it to their location. Had a punctured rear tyre which was replaced - not cheap on a DB12 Volante Michelin PS5’s
Interestingly, batteries, traditionally, have been considered "wear items" and do not typically fall under the category of a warrantied item. However, (at least in the US), because, in some cars, the battery has become an integral component of emissions systems (in the cases of cars equipped with auto stop/start) the battery is (can be) replaced under warranty. This happened to my wife's F-Pace with auto stop/start. This feature ceased to work because of the very reason of this thread. Battery would not recover anymore so the system is designed to pause auto stop/start. The dealer diagnosed this and replaced the battery under warranty.
Your conditioner looks a little like the one for my GT8 lithium battery which made by optimate and not ctek ?
When I do the same the green light light comes on as yours on the left side then an orange light comes on where your blue is and flashes for a while and when all good a second green light then appears on the right side.
Sometimes next to the second green light an orange light appears not flashing and this is one of the conditioning modes.
It can remain in this mode for a while.
Ultimately if 2 green then all good.
Hope this makes sense !
