My mother in law has lived in the same house since it was built in the late 60’s/early 70’s.

They bought it from new.

It backs on to a car parking area/access to other addresses. She has no car parking space allocated.

The road surface had deteriorated, crumbled and had become a hazard to anyone walking across it.

Recently, it was resurfaced.

She’s had an invoice from the council asking her for a £700+ contribution to the costs of the resurfacing.

Is she liable for any costs? How should we approach the council with a view to telling them where to stick their invoice?

What, in short, do we need to know?

It sounds like a communal car park.

Sometimes householders are required to pay for the maintenance/upkeep of communal areas.

The deeds to the house should show what her obligations are. Failing that the Council will be able to explain why they have invoiced her.
