Steering Problem
Discussion
After a trip out on some of our typical bumpy potholed roads I noticed the steering felt as though something had come loose and making a binding noise at certain angles of the steering wheel.
I luckily have access to a 2 post lift and investigated the problem.
I found the steering universal joint at the bottom of the steering column has a bolt in the clamp that looks too long. The bolt had been touching the fuel tank and had started to mark the plastic. This only happens when the steering is at certain angles.
It’s not been a problem before so I can only assume the tank has moved across causing the long bolt to touch the tank.
I’ve reduced the bolt length.
I’m not sure if the tank is removed as part of the fuel pump recall?
Either way I’m going to have a look at the tank and check it’s secure. It’s easier to sort it myself than drive 90 miles to Manchester on the M62.
Once I understand what’s going on I’ll contact Alpine and add to this post.

Wow, that's scary!
I have checked at Partsouq, the fuel tank is fixed with four M6 screws. Replacing the fuel pump requires to remove the battery, not the tank itself.

There was no play in either UJ of the column? That seems more likely than multiple bolts of the tank being loose.
The tank isn't moved during fuel pump recall, however if a plastic fuel tank has a alot of fuel in it, it is best drained before removing the fuel pump
/ring, as otherwise the tank can warp and refitting the pump can be an issue. That's the only way I can think a fuel tank could have changed position.
