X1 18D - EGR recall - Oil smell in the cabin after work
Discussion
Mine and my wife's daily drivers are an 2018 X1 18D and a 2018 F30 320D, which I think is the same engine in both, the B47?
We never use the local dealer for anything, and use a really good independent BMW garage for servicing. But when the recall note came through for my F30 I booked it in with the local BMW dealer. They gave me a courtesy car for the day, they valeted my car, and gave me a free heap of BMW branded crap which I didn't really want, but all in all it was fine. Car drove perfect after, as it did before, and I didn't notice anything. That was months ago and still all fine.
Recall notice came through for the X1 and it was also booked in with the local BMW dealer. The work was done 3-4 weeks ago.
They provided a courtesy car, which was just as well as the car ended up in there for over a week. They kept phoning us with updates, but the gist of it seemed to be something along the lines of: Struggling to get some bolts undone, a manifold got broken, waiting for new parts, more bolts are stuck, etc etc.
We are now 3ish weeks after the work was done and my wife mentions a burning smell in the car each morning when the car is first driven. I have sniff and it smells like burning engine oil to me. The smell you get when you spill oil onto a hot engine or exhaust.
I call BMW and tell the lady on service reception that there is an oily/burning smell when the car is driven. She says it doesn't sound good... then says she will speak to the head tech and call me back, which she does.
She says the smell is simply the "Carbon burning off" so I ask her to elaborate, and she says that "The old system was probably all bunged with carbon due to the EGR being faulty and now it's all being burned off, which is causing the smell".
I ask her how is it possible for me to smell something burining inside the engine or exhaust system, as surely that will just be going straight out of the exhaust, not stinking out the engine bay and cabin.
She tells me she has no idea and simply parrots out the line again about it being "something to do with carbon deposits".
This sounds like bulls
t to me.
Anyone any comments or suggestions?

There’s a breather pipe that splits on these. We changed one the other week after bmw had carried a recall out on the customers car.

Just buy it from bmw as it’s cheaper than that.
Thanks for that. Useful. Just buy it from bmw as it’s cheaper than that.
My concern is that they have dislodged or damaged one or more items (breather pipes, gaskets, etc) during their 8 day long botched removal and refit of the EGR and EGR cooler.
I have now booked it back in for them to inspect it, and they have been absolute dicks to me on the phone. They have outright stated that if anything needs replaced or repaired then it is categorically nothing to do with the work they carried out on the car, and is simply a coincidence, and I will be charged for it.

Its not that simple when it comes to warranties, the dealer does get hammered from both sides, but what should happen is -
Not a problem sir, bring the car back and we will have a quick look, if its something that needs further work we can book you in, if its something not related to what we have done we will quote for the repair but won't be able to confirm either way until we have seen the car.

s is my question? Surely they simply charge BMW for anything associated with the recall, so it isn't coming out of their pocket is it?
And how do we know you weren't being a runt to them first? You come across as an angry entitled pr1ck to be honest, and over something very minor, so I can see why the dealer is dishing it back to you.My concern is that they have dislodged or damaged one or more items (breather pipes, gaskets, etc) during their 8 day long botched removal and refit of the EGR and EGR cooler.

Feel free to point out, or quote, where I have said I was rude to the dealership in any way whatsoever? You weren't present when I made the phone call to discuss the issue. I'm always polite when I'm trying to get something, as I have found that works far better than being rude or aggressive.
I will be endlessly patient and polite, but what I will do, is firmly question things that I don't feel are accurate or fair, during a conversation such as this.
The only time anyone has been a dick, or decided to use a s

No attempt at customer service or understanding, just an immediate rush to try to shield her service department from the cost of whatever she suspected I was wanting from them, which would no doubt cost them money. She was clearly just trying to get rid of me, and rid her service techs of any blame, before even looking at the car.
All of which, I'm sure you will agree, was totally unacceptable.
