Been out of Aston Martin ownership for a couple of years now but am considering coming back.

My disability now prevents me from driving anything that isn’t fully automatic, I really loved my V12VS but the two gearbox options are out of the question.

Do those on here far more knowledgeable than I know of any reason why the ZF 6 or 8 speed fitted to DB9’s and so on can be fitted to VH Vantage 8 or 12 cylinder cars.

It's not just the gearbox. In a Graziano the clutch is on the engine - on a ZF the torque converter is on the transaxle. The torque tubes are different lengths and the half-axles may not fit. Then there's making the transmission ECU talk to an engine and car it was never designed for. And it's unlikely that the actual DB transaxle will fit into the Vantage subframe and under the floor.

Just buy a DB9 and enjoy it.

See I Knew this was the right place to come for a quick informative answer.. cheers chap I didn’t realise the complexity of the drive train differences.

Have always liked the DB9 anyway I shall start looking at later model ones, thanks again.

Or Vanquish, they have a 6sp ZF auto or I think from 2014/15 the 8sp ZF?

Thanks chap I certainly think they are also a model to consider, I’d really want the latest by year of either and of course condition is paramount ….. and yes the later 8 speed would be great.

DB9 was always 6 speed btw, which really suits the car, so dont let that put you off.

I would look at this one -

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202502088...

Then, like Andy (M1AGM) when he had his DB9.2 go to Bamford Rose, get a primary decat and change the engine map to a 2nd gen Vanquish (the engines are the same, just different software programming) then you'll have a 590bhp rocket ship.

Steve from Aston 1936 got this wrong, only the 6 speed ZF was in the DB9, right upto the end.

Seems so; I have Grant Neil's book here and it doesn't mention an 8-speed for the DB9, only Vanquish and Rapide.

Can confirm. DB9 was still 6-spd when DB11 replaced it.

You need to have a DB9.2 or a Rapide S and the PCM's can be reprogrammed, this is from the Bamford Rose website -

The second-generation DB9 and Rapide S essentially have the same engine as the Vanquish Mk II. However, they have been electronically restricted to create more differentiation between the models in the range and the Vanquish Mk II.
Bamford Rose reworks the ECU reprogramming to derestrict DB9.2 and Rapide S enabling the engine to perform much nearer Vanquish Mk II standard c565 BHP/c620Nm than the 510 BHP/620 Nm quoted for the original DB9.2. £POA

Plus a primary decat with the high flow secondaries will increase BHP by around 25bhp = 590bhp!!!

To be clear, this refers only to the AM11 engine, of course.
