Boycotting USA holidays

In Vancouver a week ago it was striking how strong the anti Trump sentiment was. Canadians were cancelling holidays to USA, with 2025 flight bookings and traffic at border crossing significantly down. Coffee shop menus had changed to Canadiano. USA immigration clamp down with reported jailing of tourists made travel south even less appealing.

Personally, I have not had any desire to return to USA for a long time. Wonder whether PHer tourism sentiment has changed since Trump v2 commenced.

Many years ago when living in Canada the appeal of the US was cheaper and better cigarettes and we would frequently travel over the quieter border points for some illicit cross border shopping. That all stopped in the 90s when you could at last get decent cigs in Canada and their beer has always been superior.

It is the centenary of Route 66 next year. We were planning a trip. We did it a few years ago and said we would do it again when we retired and take a couple of months this time and do west to east.

Really hoping it has died down by next year.

It's an interesting one - obviously much closer to home if you are Canadian and some of the stuff that's been mentioned about that is pretty batst and downright offensive so you can see why there's a big backlash there.

As a Brit I'd certainty think twice about going to a "red" state with any women of a child bearing age and if I had any public comments that were negative about Trump.

Which I probably have.

Not much hope, probably gets even sillier. Trump has well over 3 years to destroy everything he doesn't like.

Not at all. It's a country, not a person. Only reason I've not got a burning urge to return is the prices. The fatc that half the country doesn't like its president does not make it much different to most other countries.

Why anyone would want to go to that country, I’ve no idea.

My wife and 16 year old are going for Easter to NYC to stay with her sister who lives there

They are planning three days in DC going by train from NYC and seeing all the sights there including the WH etc

I'd be going too, but unfortunately I can't get travel insurance for the US

Fair point.

I am not sure what it is about my opinion that warrants rolled eyes.
Loads of Canadians seem to agree for a start.

Make sure they don’t have any anti administration stuff in their messages or on their socials. Some European travel providers have been pulling trips as mentioned in the Canada travel thread.

No, I am not likely to change my holiday plans because people in a democracy voted.

You think those are a reason to visit? I’m well aware that millions of people a year visit for the reasons you’ve listed but why?

I used to think that until we did out first road trip, circumnavigating the Grand Canyon. So much to do and see.

Plus there are some really great people, especially when you get out of the cities.

Your post was utter tosh , I am Canadian and cross the border quite often , no issues . Biggest problem for us at present is the exchange rate that for years was very attractive now makes trips a tad expensive .
