My Escort is eligible for historic tax class from 1 April (first registered Feb 1984), and its current VED runs out on 31 March. It's also parked on street at present as my off-road parking is blocked.

I was initially thinking of not renewing the VED and going straight to the post office on 1 April to change it over. But I'm now thinking that's not ideal since (a) I'll be working and it's a rush to do it in my one-hour break, (b) the nearest 'car tax' post office is on the edge of a council estate and I suspect the staff there will have little or no experience of historic vehicle status, (c) it will leave the car untaxed on the street for several hours. Actually, I'm not sure if trying to change the tax class of a vehicle that's currently untaxed causes any issue, or whether that's irrelevant.

So I'm now thinking it would be wiser to renew the tax online in advance and then I can sort out the tax class change at my leisure, possibly at a different post office, and get a refund.

Just sharing my own thinking here - anyone else have any thoughts?

If you are prepared to loose the cost of a months tax for the peace of mind that the car is taxed whilst the Historic change takes place, then it’s a small price to pay to give you a month to do it.

I’ve got one to do next week, it’s currently SORN’d, but I do want to use it next weekend, so I’m hoping they will tax it for free next week, if not I’ll tax it online and then do the change / get the refund of the other 5 months

Peace of mind is a good phrase for it - yes, I'll tax it online, thanks.

When my Moto Guzzi (motorbike) became 'historic', I went to the post office with the appropriate, downloaded form, V5 etc. and after a few minutes in there it was changed to historic and (free) taxed for 12 months.

A new V5 arrived in the post a few days later, actually considering the grief that DVLA etc. get, I was impressed how smoothly it all went.

Sorted this out at the local Post Office today, quick scan of the bar code on the V5C,which they kept, some keyboard action, and I walked out with the £0.00 receipt for 12 months tax as a Historic vehicle.

A simple process if you get the right PO / Person smile
