Following on from the Prepper and SHTF threads...

Interesting advice from Brussels yesterday that all households should have 72 hrs of supplies.

Not that most people wouldn't already have three days worth of food and meds anyway.

Quite a few European countries have been suggesting this for a while now too.

I bet a lot of people don't have that much in. I've rented places before that only had the tiny freezer compartment in the top of the fridge, and I know people who seem to live almost entirely on takeaways so probably don't have much in at all. When I was a kid my mother used to go to the supermarket once a week, now I, like many others, usually pick up a few bits at a time several times a week as it's a quick stop on my way home from work and means fresh bread/veg rather than stuff that's been sat in the cupboard for a week, so while we probably do have well over a weeks worth of food stashed in the house, some of the meals we could make might be a bit odd biggrin We certainly don't have 3 days of water stored though.

On Tuesday the wife batch cooked 20 meals for 2 people, this is on top of what was already a pair of reasonably full freezers. We will probably be fine, but the bigger issue is she some kind of prepper?

Your wife isn't a pepper, you can't realistically make a single portion of stew, curry, chilli etc so you have to batch cook.

I usually make somewhere between 8~12 portions of curry or chilli at a time. It's cheaper to run a full freezer anyway.

I get my curry spices from Wetwang in Yorkshire, nothing to do with the thread just that 'Wetwang' is juvenile and makes me snigger...

My mother has enough food to last 3 months in her cupboards and freezer laugh My Father was a bit of a nightmare with money, so my Mother always tried to keep a good stock in. They split up 30 years ago, but she still does it even though her and my Step Father are not short of a few quid. When the apocalypse comes, I will be knocking on her door laugh

We've had our water cut off 7 times in the last 12mths so we always keep the kettle full!

This all seems to have happened since we got rid of the tank in the loft and went pressurised - so now all we've got is one flush from each toilet.

My parents old house had a massive water tank - apparently they were sized for two days supply.

There days worth of drinking water might be pushing it for some in case water supplies got disrupted.

We seem to have enough tins to survive a zombie apocalypse.

I think my mum has panic attacks if she has less than a thousand teabags in the house at any one time.

Recently dipped below 10 bottles of rum in my drinks cabinet. Gives me a good reason to stock-up.

The trouble with keeping a stock of frozen food is if the power goes out for an extended period it's wasted.

If something so significant were to happen that we were without food/water/power for 3 days I'd rather just die in the initial wave of whatever the event was tbh

My wife seems addicted to the TikTok shop, with this weeks favourite being cans of fizzy pop. We probably have well over a hundred cans of tango etc at the moment. We won't die of thirst, but we may be a bit burpy.

I'm seriously doubting that the whole country can be resupplied on the fourth day.

The three-day recommendation is for the public to have their own supplies while centralised stocks are readied & distributed. Whether we actually have enough stockpiles with sufficient stores is another question!

They're not necessarily talking about everyone being without all of them. There's currently houses in Kent that have been without water for nearly a week due a burst water main. Not a huge number of people effected but a terrorist attack on a pumping station could knock out water to quite a lot of people and take a few days to fix.
We've already seen shortages of loo roll and petrol due to people panic buying, so quite believable that a relatively minor issue could lead to shortages.
Then there's the chance of electronic payment systems or haulage companies getting hacked and meaning a disruption in the supermarkets

Just as well we left then so we can respond quicker without all that bureaucracy getting in the way biggrin

The UK launched a similar campaign a year ago
