Given an option I don’t think many enthusiasts would go for a Z3M over an E30 M3 !
That said I think it was Evo recently did a group test of the M cars and concluded that taking everything into account
such as price etc the Z3M was the one to buy….

I’ve probably missed some, but yeah, there have been a few. Most, if not all of the above I’d say are preferable to the Z3M Coupe.
Certainly can’t agree that most if not all are better than the Z3M .
The Z4M and M2 despite being newer are certainly not nicer to be behind the wheel of.
E90 and E92 M3’s most likely of no interest to the average Z3M buyer.
M5 models ain’t really of any consequence compared to a small 2 seater sports car

in that list. I do occasionally drive mine back to back with my Z3MC there both great cars in different ways but the 1M is hard to beat.. in fact of my small collection of 'M' cars the 1M is the top of my list...

It’s funny how the Z3M coupe now appears as a classic or desirable BMW to invest in ; the reality is that parts are becoming a real issue to find, some guy in Latvia or Lithuania has collared the market and is doing very nicely indeed. There is another company in US that is making copy parts but they are hugely expensive.
I’ve driven several over long distances with a mate who has owned 3 - an S50 and 2 S52s. The novelty factor is huge, but really it’s the (phenomenal) engine you enjoy.
The handling isn’t brilliant and you certainly appreciate the traction control introduced in later models when it’s raining.
Mate had one with AC Schnitzer suspension, which made the car more direct and go-kart like but also more snappy at the limit, which is the last thing this car needs. Improved the ride though. Had a great ACS exhaust too.
Bad news :They rust. Rust bad in all the known places like rear subframes, roof joins etc. Mate has had to get remedial work done and has resprayed both of the cars he’s owned. Current one has been in storage waiting for a specialist to get around to doing the 2nd round of rust repair in 10 years.
So it’s a fun thing and a novelty, and the engine is 95% of the driving experience, but if going into to purchase one you need your eyes wide open. There are a lot of £25k + examples out there that are rough as. ( I spent a few months last year toying with buying one and saw 8 i believe).

I've only ever driven one M car and that is the Z4M Coupe I've had for 5 years now.
There is something I really like about the looks of the Z3MC, but for many years they have been way more expensive than Z4MCs even though they are generally reckoned to drive better and are still a good looking car.
Everyone has their own favourite and it's all very subjective, but there isn't one I'd rather have than what I've got. What I do find strange is that despite having the same front brakes and steering as the E46 M3 CSL they are cheaper than standard M3 Coupes.
