South Island Luxury car scene
Discussion
Hello all.
I will be moving to NZ with my family next year on a permanent basis. I am aware that there is a provision when emigrating to bring a vehicle with you that you already own without being liable for the GST. As a result I am planning to try and bring something quite nice (not sure what yet but will almost certainly be something from the GT department at Porsche!).
We will be living in Wanaka, and I just thought I'd ask on here if there are many people in the area with those kind of cars and if so what you tend to do about servicing/maintenance etc. I believe there's a Porsche main dealer in Christchurch but is there anything more local that is reputable for independent maintenance or works? Google has not been particularly helpful and a word of mouth recommendation always goes a long way.
Can't wait to get over there. I've spent a lot of time there over the years and always wished I had been with a nice car rather than whatever I was renting at the time. Some of the best roads in the world out there and amazing scenery. I sense a lot of road trips!

Hey Pat, I'm in Auckland so cant help about local servicing etc, however there's definitely some great roads down there and a great track called highlands that isnt a million miles away. Most of the drives around that way will be weekend long trips with a night in a nice hotel/cottage somewhere, so maybe bare that in mind when looking at what to get. Personally if it were me choosing a car for down there I'd be looking at the more road orientated side of the porsche range than track (ie something that isnt going to shatter your spine, over the 6 hour drives.
A GT porsche would be a good shout as their values are really high here vs most other places. Have a look on Trademe (our local version of ebay) for reference.
As an alternative to a porsche center down here you might also contact local (to you) race car preparation/maintenance shops who will be able to take care of it for you.
Good luck with the move.

If you're on Facebook have a look for the Queenstown cars and coffee group, there are some nice cars that go along to their monthly meets so someone should be able to help.
The Delorean was down there for the Ayrburn Classic, another one worth searching for on Facebook, there was some special machinery there last weekend.
Lots of car events up in Christchurch.
If you're bringing a car in from overseas you have to be able to prove you've owned it for a year and been using it to avoid the GST.

^ as above, you can (each adult) bring in one car as part of your home contents / possessions that you have owned and can prove that you have used for at least a year. You don’t have to bring the car(s) in when you first arrive - you have a while to bring them in. Transitioning from a 60+ million population to just over a million on the South Island (plus tourists) will require some adjustment, enjoy it!
In quite a few cases there won’t be an exact example of your car here due to the smaller population, but there are a few, especially in the Southern Lakes area.
Yes there are great roads down here, but the Police rigorously enforce speed limits, especially on the main roads, but there are opportunities to stretch your legs as long as you are sensible.

Not that I wish to encourage exceeding the speed limit, but that's what the Police and politicians want you to believe. In my experience, most places south of Dunedin you can drive for days without ever seeing a police car on any road, including the State Highways, apart from the ones parked outside the Police Stations. Consequently, overtaking on solid lines or blind brows/bends, using phones, and ignoring basic road rules are rife

Yep, agree with that, they're also not the militant nutters you'd read about, giving fines for 1kph over.
I got let off with 124kph in a 100kph area on the desert road last winter for example. - I didn't do anything special, was just polite and friendly and honest. That won't always be the result obviously but it does show good guys are out there.
Usually a Radar detector is enough to prevent you getting busted in most situations (mine was in the glovebox in the above situation, lol) and even then, I prefer to stay below 120, as 100 is just a quick dab of the brakes away and I have my fun in the corners which are also 100, despite being hairpins etc.

Getting let off with a warning is a very rare occurrence these days no matter how polite and friendly you are, they don't seem to have as much individual discretion for that as they used to. You won't see cops off the main roads very often though.I got let off with 124kph in a 100kph area on the desert road last winter for example. - I didn't do anything special, was just polite and friendly and honest. My last one was a speed camera ticket at 46km/h in a short and badly signposted 40 zone.
Before that was 113 in a quiet part of Central Otago (Ida Valley), literally a minute after I'd commented to my passenger that you never see cops on that road... murphy's law! The cop had a good laugh about that too but still gave me the ticket.
Also had a 56 in a 50 zone speed camera ticket, allegedly a school zone - I was on SH1, the school was down a side road and it was about 7 on a Friday night!
So good to see them focussing on important crime...
