Some time ago I was offered the opportunity of joining this scheme which is run in conjunction with the NHS. It is open to all adults.

It's a research scheme which has been set up to assist the NHS with future planning of healthcare.

They have signed up about 1.3m people so far and have just published some initial results.

About a sixth of participants have been previously diagnosed with heart and/or circulatory disease.

I thought that this was a surprisingly high figure for the UK. What do others think?

Could it simply be that young, healthy, energetic & busy people simply aren't participating?

On the day that I attended there seemed to be quite a broad range of ages.

I don't think you can infer anything from that, unless they were randomly selected people which it doesn't sound like it was.

I went, it is kind of a waste of time for anyone that is remotely healthy as they don't tell you anything you didn't already know. You do get a £10 love to shop voucher though.

I joined this too, but didn’t get offered a voucher! I’m also part of UK Biobank, which is a similar sort of thing. Every so often they ask me to complete a survey, then every 5 years or so, I go to one of their regional centres and undergo a battery of tests. They give me some, simple results, but will only discuss the results of the main tests, CT, MRI etc if they discover something that may be potentially life threatening!!! Literally, when I’ve been for one of their test sessions, no news is good news.

Is this the thing where they harvest your DNA sequencing and totally won't use it against you in some way in the future? tongue out

"Heart and or circulatory disease" might include something as simple as high blood pressure which is very common, probably higher than 1 in 6

As above I'd guess that those who are completely well, with no existing medical conditions at all, are less likely to participate.

What made you think it would tell you anything about your personal health at all, giving that's not the point of it?

That's true, but kinda misses the point. The scheme is about helping them (NHS researchers) to understand health trends in a large group of people, not helping individual participants get healthier (although that may be a side benefit for some).

To the OP. Around a quarter of adults in the UK have high blood pressure, so that 1 in 6 figure might actually be quite low.

They should just go on a P&O short cruise leaving from Southampton if they want to know the truth. Fat lazy fkers who eat fried breakfast every day and have a plate of cakes for desert and then spend all day drinking.

So overweight that some of them can barely walk and will queue for the lift rather than walk up two flights of steps.

After going on one a couple of weeks ago I can see why life expectancy is falling.

After Dementia and Alzheimer's, Heart Disease is the UK's biggest annual killer. Personally I'm not surprised.

I also wonder if this survey was conducted before or after the year 2021.

It's not really intended as a health report for you though, it's to provide a mass of data that may benefit the next generation.

It was good to see that my cholesterol & trigs were coming down nicely though when I went along. Didn't stop me having a heart attack 6 months later though!
