Hi All,

We’ve had our XC90 for almost 8 years now and it’s going to need replacing soon but I, struggling to think what to replace it with. We’ve got a cash budget of around £30k but could stretch this slightly for the right car. If we use finance we could go higher but haven’t traditionally gone down this route so I would need to convince the other half.

We need a big car as we regularly go camping with our 2 children and often take the dog as well. When we go away we completely fill the car have a roof box and often also have a trailer with the bikes on top so we don’t travel light.
My wife is keen on a plug in hybrid as she could do all her local mileage on electric but then have ICE for the longer trips so we don’t have to think about charging etc.
The automatic choice would be a newer XC90 T8 as our existing car has been perfect but I’ve seen quite a lot of stories of them being unreliable and owners receiving huge bills.
We are also considering a Skoda Superb estate along with the BMW X5 or even potentially a Range Rover (same issue as the Volvo but worse!) or we could go left field and look at a BMW iX as they are almost in budget, but what am I forgetting or what else should we consider?

Thanks

I know this won't be what you want to hear but an SMax/Galaxy is the best for space unless you are looking at vans.

Thanks Bill, we would happily consider something like a Galaxy, my concerns with these though is most are diesel and as we keep our cars a long time would we effectively get banned from going to certain places as more and more cities are being in emission zones both here and in Europe.

We did consider an ID Buzz but I’m not sure they have the range we would want unfortunately.

How about a VW multivan? As I saw you mentioned the ID buzz as well, and possible finance.

These can be had in plug in hybrid too

Maybe not big enough but plenty of Cayenne PHEVs in that price range.

There are a lot more petrols about these days because of that.

France and the Critair system has potential to be a pain, but for the rare times we want to drive into London I just pay the ULEZ charge.

The BMW ix doesn't have a particularly big boot relative to the car size at 500 litres.

A Skoda Kodiaq has 900 litres as a comparison if not using the 3rd row of seats. For 30k you'd just about get a petrol VRS model with the golf Gti engine.

Galaxies are huge and excellent larger family transport - I have one.

But if the dog occupies the boot and you have 2 children I don't see the benefit for you? Unless it allows you to have a split dog/luggage boot and you can ditch the trailer?

Id be looking at whatever has a boot sufficient for the dog and otherwise is more interesting than a galaxy

Your not banned, as its ok to polute as long as you pay a bit of extra tax for the powers in charge works partys.

I’d not thought about the Kodiaq so I’ll have a look at them as well thanks
