Hey Folks,

I've just had a valve clearance done on my Honda by a guy that comes highly recommended and he's done many before mine so I am confident he done it right.

The engine was silent before it got done and after the valve clearance the tapping noise is terrible, like horrendous levels, thing sounds like a diesel engine it's that bad. He mentioned that the valve's were so tight when he opened it up that he couldn't fit the lowest gauge in between them and now they have been set to what Honda recommend (done when engine is stone cold), which has now caused this insanely loud tapping noise.

I'm taking it back on Monday and he is gonna re-check it all but he also thinks if the valve's look fine on double checking then it could be the timing chain/tensioner causing it? which is another rabbit hole to go down because replacing those is costly and if it turns out not to be that then a huge waste of cash and a very sore head situation, the car is 114k miles 2008 plate for reference.

He's gonna tighten them back up a tiny bit at a time to see how the engine reacts on Tuesday as the valve clearance needs to be done when the engine is stone cold so it will be left over night from Monday.

Any thoughts/opinions would be much appreciated, just had the clutch/master & slave cylinders done along with full gasket kit and valve clearance/Aux Belt so a big job and costy.

Thanks,
Steve

How long have you had the car?
Could they have been tightened right up to mask a problem?

Hopefully it’s nothing too bad. If the tapping changes with the valve adjustment then worst case I guess you’re looking at cam chain, tensioner and/or cam/valve train replacement. Ie the engine itself should be ok.

Hey bud thanks for the reply.

I bought the car in 2023 and it's been running quiet as since I've had it but I knew I had to get some checks/engine parts replaced for peace of mind due to the age being 2008 and over 100k miles. The mechanic did say that to me right off the bat, possibly been tightened up alot to stop the noise/hide a potential problem and he also mentioned it could be the chain/tensioner causing a timing problem which he thinks would potentially make it sound so tappy like that with the valves being set to Honda Spec.

When you say cam/valve train are you meaning the camshaft? Just so I know for bringing that up to check on Monday, and are there any easy to spot issues with that if he takes a look?

Thanks!

Yeah or lifters/tappets. Anything that with wear would cause the engine to tap more.
Fingers crossed for you mate.
