Battery looses about 1% of charge over 24hours, then all of a sudden it looses 6% and occasionally more, cranking votage is generally around 8.5v

Faulty battery or something more serious.

Advice appreciated.

No point guessing when testing amperage draw is easy and conclusive. I would start there.

Thanks, I will go on youtube later and learn how to test for amperage draw

Just buy a new battery - that one's knackered.

Then he'll have 2 knackered batteries if there's a fault causing it.

8.5v when cranking is a knackered battery whichever way up you hold it.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I think you're likely right and the battery is knackered. What I'm suggesting is that it's worth a quick test to ensure there isn't another reason the battery is knackered. If you replace a battery without doing a quick check you risk throwing away the cost of a new battery.

As an aside I have had a brand new decent battery show around that voltage when an accessory was seized. Not really relevant to the OP's situation but I mention it here in case someone is searching for starting faults with low voltage.
