I have been looking at a lot of Ebay over the past few weeks.
There are a lot of selling on behalf of my Dad, selling for my friend, estate sale etc . It's really quite common on low value cars.

They can't all be genuine, what's the story ? Smells fishy.

I have a classic MK2 jag I am genuinely selling on behalf of my father,

he is 84 and doesn't do the internet very well.

So some will be genuine.

Trader pretending to be a private seller, to avoid CRA2015?

On that point loads are registered as Private sellers, but if you click their other items , they have 6 or so cars .How does that work.

I sold my stepfather's last 2 cars for him. He didn't do the internet; I just put this upfront, bidders had no issue with it as far as I could tell. Both cars were under £1500 though. I've no doubt some are fibbing though, unless they have the whole V5c, which they should have. scratchchin

This ^^^ . "Selling for my dad/mum/friend" etc = I know it's completely fked but I'm hoping you'll believe my bullst and buy it, then I'll block your number so you can't contact me when the engine seizes on the M1 on your way home.

And it's fairly easy to spot in a lot of cases. On Facebook marketplace, view profile of seller is often amusing. Do I want to buy a car off a bloke that is clearly a nutter.

It was always thus even before the Internet.

You'd ring up.

I'm phoning about the car... (which one)
How long have you had it....
Why are you selling it ?....
Is the V5 in your name.....at this point you get to hear "I'm.selling it for my aunt...
I once said ... Will I be able to speak to her in person? .
I also once said ... I'm sorry for your loss...I know this is weird, but I need to know you are the executor, so when we do the paperwork it would be good if I could see a copy of the death certificate. I know its too soon for grant of probate.... to which I got an earful.... which I don't think I'd have got if they'd been genuine...

At the time I truly believed the seller about his loss and that it was important to ensure that I was going to become the legal owner of the car.
These days I'd just assume they were lying and not take it further. My mum just had to transfer the V5 to.her name from my Dad's so there's no reason why someone wouldn't if they were genuine.

Registered keeper is not the same as owner, DVLA emphasise this.

It's unnecessary to add a keeper to the list in the case of bereavement, although it makes people more comfortable perhaps. If a different address, then yes, they need to send the VED reminders and PCNs from cloned cars to somebody. rolleyes

I will be in this position in the near future sadly. My dad has pancreatic cancer and I will be executor of his estate. I had wondered what to do about his car when the time comes although haven't researched anything yet. Private sale would be a big hassle I'm sure so it will most likely need to go to a buying site like WBAC or similar.

Some people are genuine and it's probably fairly easy to sort out who is or isn't.

Fair enough - it was a mild dig.

Sometimes garages with less than favourable reputations sell decent cars. It’s not the car’s fault.

WBAC will want legally binding proof you’re entitled to sell the car.

Really PP’s point is perfectly valid - it’s often an issue buying a car privately anyway as you rarely see the original invoice for proof of owner.

I was in this position two years ago. He was insured with Tesco and they were happy to keep the policy running for a couple of weeks to get stuff sorted. First time I'd used WBAC, was totally straightforward, just the V5 and a death certificate. 20 minutes and done.

Thanks for that, good to know.

It's a very mainstream car and now worth under £5k. But he's had it 10 years from new and looked after it. It's garaged and doesn't get used much now but I don't think he could face selling it himself and I'd rather him not have to worry about it. I'll deal with it when the time comes.
