Hi this might be a simple one for this corner of Pistonheads but here goes:

My family and extended family are lucky enough to all get along and have regular get-togethers and days out etc, but the money side of things is always a nuisance. My brother and I are looking for an easy way to sort out the paying side of things as it often gets messy at paying the bill time whether it be a restaurant, bar bill, booking tickets or booking holidays.

We usually end up with a nice problem of everyone wants to pay and then afterwards there will be money being sent from every direction to every direction to square things up.

We've spoken about opening a joint account and putting 3 family members on it, all with a card each as the 3 of us are usually the ones who take care of bookings, which could be deposited by everyone before the fact.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how they overcome this 'problem'?

Nothing constructive to say but please think twice about opening a joint account. Doing so would create a formal financial link between any parties and this could effect credit files.

One of you takes out a credit card specifically for paying things then everyone sends money to that. Can add a second card holder (you or your brother) then both have access and everyone can contribute?

For trips with friends, we’ve started using “Splitwise” which is an app for phones. People pay for rounds, dinner, coffees, etc. and then, at the end of the trip, it tells you how much you owe other people (or they owe you).

It reduces the number of people whose shoe laces become magically undone as we’re about to walk into a bar.

We use the “Splid” app for that purpose
