This is just a rant really - thank you for letting me have it.

I resigned from my old company in November 2024 and took a little time off.
When it came to doing my 23/24 tax return in dec/jan 24, I look for a P45. Oh, they didn't send it to me.

So a bit of chasing up and I get them to send me a P45. Great.

Then go in to fill my tax return out with HMRC and my total employment income is a little different to the P45 (that one they'd send me a week earlier).
OK, no problems, I have a P45 that says X that they sent me last week, I'll update it accordingly. All good.

Now in March I get a letter from HMRC telling me my tax return was wrong. WTF?

So a bit of chasing up - turns out that the P45 my old employer gave me was wrong - they'd made another payment to me beyond the P45, but hadn't told me about.
So I neither got a payslip representing this extra payment, nor did I get a correct P45 from them with HMRC now sending me their "special" letters that say I owe them more money.

Just reinforces my view of most finance departments : "Finance department of 20 year old company surprised by month end for the 240th time"

I left my previous employer in January, not had a payslip or P45.

Wonder why I left …
