Torn a bit recently, gotta sell my current car to downsize to something that's going to be with me 2 years plus as my only car, but being a sucker for automotive pain I'm not looking at the "smart" choice, instead I still want something exciting for the money even if it is slightly comprimised.
I find myself deciding between an S1 106 Rallye with a bit of rot in the expected places, or an R53 Cooper S in pretty good nick. So totally different expereinces both from a driving and ownership point of view. I've had a 205 GTI in the past which I LOVED so that's where my heart is, but I know the R53 will be easier to live with, more mod cons etc so that's where my head is.
As the title says, hard to choose between what the head says I should do and what the heart wants, anyone got experience with either car as a daily proposition?

Not quite the same but I owned a 106GTi S2 for 3 years, a car which I loved and apart from servicing cost me nothing. I've also owned both an R53 Cooper S and an R53 JCW, I wished I'd kept the JCW but with baby number 2 on the way and a house purchase I needed the money out of the car.
The main expense I had with the Cooper S was the heater matrix died on it and the cost for a new one was quite a lot.
I think it would boil down as to how much you would use it as a daily, as the R53 is definitely an easier car to live with than a Rallye.
Good luck and maybe some photos of each may help us decide for you..

I nearly bought a 106 GTi once, can't remember why I didn't pull the trigger on it now.
Loved my R53 though, can't beat that supercharger. I modified mine a lot, but it was pretty epic by the end... probably the little hot hatch I miss the most to be honest! And I've had a few.
I've also had 206 & 208 GTi and a number of Renault's finest, but it's the Mini for me, always

That's the other thing, where the car can be taken modding wise it's no competition, mini all the way. Just have had 300bhp+ cars before but found there's enjoyment to be had less of the time, hence wanting to go back to something old and french... just the temptation of daily supercharger whine is too great to ignore D:
