Hi All,

BMW 440i with the larger blue calliper brakes(2016 car).

Pads and discs replaced all round at a friends garage. Fronts squeaked so took it back and they tell me they replaced them under warranty.

The squeaks are back and probably worse than ever but only at slow speed.

I feel a bit uncomfortable going back to the garage as it is a friend but the noise is really getting annoying.

Can this be fixed - backing plate lubrication or whatever? Or would I likely need a new set?

Many thanks

Which discs and pads have you used and have any anti squeal shims been fitted (or removed)?

Have you tried the likes of Liqui Moly's anti squeal paste? It works really well FYI:

I've got the blue Brembo 370/345mm brakes on my F31; OEM M Performance discs/pads all round and no noise at all; but a dab of the anti squeal paste was used as well

They told me they are Brembo, I haven’t looked at them to be honest and am not in a position to get on the spanner’s with this car.

Brembo are generally ok; but not the best at times, more so their pads

Are the discs the correct 2 piece discs, or 1 piece (ie can you see rivets around the middle of the brake discs)?

Personally I'd get them looked at again if they're still being noisy and maybe look to fit OEM BMW discs/pads; or get better pads (I run Pagid Street+ pads on my 130i with Brembo 340mm calipers; they run the same sized pads up front as the 370mm Brembo calipers) and they're very good

Genuine BMW front brake pads here; not that expensive and they don't squeal at all: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265167767583

Same here, F30 with M brakes. Only one change all round at main dealer. OEM parts, never had any squeal issues. On most parts I would stick with OEM, knowing at first hand the extensive development and testing that goes into components, systems, and vehicles.

There's no guarantees with squeal. It's just a trait of the Blue Brembos and a particularly stubborn disc/pad resonance. Unlike a lot of VAGs, there is no tuning blocks attached to the calipers to silence it.

I fitted genuine 370mm discs with genuine M sport pads about 22,000 miles ago. 18 months of silent braking and just this week they've started doing the low speed squeal pulling up at junctions and roundabouts.

It’s a strange one. It didn’t do it yesterday and I wonder if I’d be wasting my money if I took it to a garage.

Yes; you are...

Have you tried some safe but hard braking from speed; and a slow'ish drive with the handbrake pulled on a bit

This can help clear mating faces etc and rid any dust build up

Mine also didn't squeal yesterday. To be honest I've given up being concerned about it. It's irritating for sure but not a lot can be done about it in the long term.....apart from bolting on some tuning blocks.

Wasting your £££ taking it to a garage

And you apply the Liqui Moly paste to the moving parts of the pads 'the ears' etc as that's generally where the noise comes from; its resonance

I used loads of that paste Dan. It's just a use case thing unfortunately. Daily drivers will tend to get more squealy action because as you say, they don't get many oppurtunites to really stand on the brakes and burn off any build up.
