I had 5th gear noise so my g'box is being repaired at the moment, when I removed the rubber gaiter on the gearstick it was pop riveted into the fibreglass with washers to stop the rivets pulling through the rubber gaiter and had what I assume was black silicone all over it to seal it to the fibreglass too.
I'm assuming it should be screwed in place and not riveted?
Would the factory have used silicone vs polyurethane-based like tiger seal?

Thanks
Mark

Pop rivets sounds original, but silicone probably added by a previous owner.

I was told that the gear boxes cannot be repaired. Where are you having the work completed if you don't mind. Thanks.

The T5 gearbox is used on multiple makes of car, so I'm surprised that perhaps, someone advised you of this.

They're also tough, IME. I've had 5 x TVRs with one and never had an issue, so can't suggest anywhere, personally.

It's been repaired and re-installed at the weekend, all good.
I took it to: https://www.gearboxman.co.uk/
I think they appear a few times in Pistonheads from other TVR owners. I did try someone closer to home but they basically didn't want to touch it saying parts availability etc.
I had a noisy 5th gear and it would also make a noticeable clonk as I went on and off the power so they initially thought it would be a cheap repair, unfortunately once pulled apart there was more wear showing on the gear 5th meshes with so at this point they said they would perform a full rebuild.
Total cost inc VAT was £1600. From a quick Google it looks like the rebuild kit is around £700+ just for parts and that doesn't include any gears.
Just to be clear I took the gearbox to them, they do offer a remove/refit but I chose to do that myself.
