19 year old son got stopped by the police today for going round a corner too quickly apparently. We now have a section 59 attached to the family runabout for a year banghead

I don't want an insurance black box but would like a private one so I can keep an eye on him and ensure he isn't a danger to himself and everyone else. Can anyone recommend anything?

Removing access to the car isn't an option as he starts work before public transport can get him there unfortunately.

There is an enormous variety of 'Trackers' on the market ... that's the word you need to google. add in 'teen aged son'... then you'll probably find the product you need.

Tons of options, but this will do the job. It’s designed for the fleet market and tracks excessive cornering g-force, harsh braking and speed limits.

I’ve had one on one of my cars for years as a cheap gps tracker in case it gets nicked and can’t fault it.

Thanks, those look interesting. I will call Trutrak tomorrow and check it does all I am looking for, not interested in tracking but really want a record of breaches of the speed limit, harsh braking and high-g cornering(well as much as a Mazda 2 can corner on 2 wheels).

I'd rather try and educate him on safe driving before he has a problem than deal with the consequences of being a young idiot.

If one changes number plate, does the S59 marker stay on the plate or the car?

Stays with the car as I understand it.

Just in case anyone is interested, I called Trutrak and unfortunately you only get notified for speeding if they go above a set speed which is no use for my application. I want to know if he is doing 50mph in a 30 or 49 in a 40, rather than going above 75mph anywhere for example.

I've sent an email request to drivepro as it looks like they may do it but I want to make sure.

Stays with the number plate record, and the driver.

Ordered a "Drivepro FMT100 Easy-fit GPS Tracker - 12 Months Pro Service Bundle". Seems to do everything and £77 for a years service seems reasonable for what it does.

Thanks for the steers on what to look for.

Nothing useful to add, just curious to know what the police regarded as 'going round a corner too quickly'?

They wouldn't say, although the "corner" was a crossroad with lights. He was turning right and stopped to let traffic past, so he was going at 0 when he started turning and then not much faster 10m later when he finished the turn. It was an absolute rubbish claim from the police, I don't know why they really stopped him as the cornering thing was a blatant lie.

One of the policemen called me from my son's phone which shook me up as I am the registered keeper, I asked why he was stopped and he wouldn't say. He sounded like an absolute arse on the phone, not a great advert for the police.

Shirley a dashcam would have proved his position and speed?

He didn't have one, now got the gps tracker which is fantastic. Now tell him off regularly for speeding which he hates.

lol ^^

It sounds like he could do with some advanced training - IAM or RoSPA are the usual well-known options, but there are various other 1-to-1 options out there with recommendations from members on here.

If the limits were set correctly (85th percentile and not Mean Speed) there would not be so many people feeling like they need to exceed numbers on a pole to be at the natural speed for a given road, so I do have some sympathy in that regard!

Yes leave him all to his immature 19 year old self, lose his licence and then lose his job and career as he needs the car to get to work. Great plan biggrin
