Recently moved into a new house and am planning to install hive heating.

Strange (to me) is that there are two existing thermostats but both are downstairs.

We have one thermostat in the living room and a second (about 3 feet away) in the hallway.

I had assumed that maybe the one in the hall controlled upstairs but why would it be installed downstairs and so close together.?

Ive tried to determine which rads are driven by which thermostat but it hasn't been that easy.

So I guess i have three questions.

1. Why would two thermostats be placed so close downstairs.
2. Is there an easy definitive way for me a non-expert to determine what is driven by each thermostat.

The house is only 6 years old.

Yes they both have power and allow the level to be set.

I've fitted a new electronic room stat/heating programmer in the living room. It's taken the feed from an old fashioned on/off type in the hall. I could have wired them in series.

I wonder if someone has done the same in your house. Operating by leaving the hall set high and regulating the heating from the daisy chained one in your living space.

Do the radiators have TRVs on them?

If so, it's quite likely there isn't a thermostat for upstairs, but water will flow if a) any thermostat is calling for heat and b) a TRV allows flow.

I would suggest you go read up on heating systems and look at things like the heat geek videos.

What is your heat source and what are its modulation capabilities? What control systems can it use? have you considered weather compensation?

Just to close this out. Had thermostats changed for Hive and the engineer confirmed one thermostat is just for the living room and the other in the hall controls the rest of the house - downstairs and upstairs. Weird but it is what it is.

Is the living room an extension? - so probably on it's own zone valve, nessistating a thermostat.

No not an extension. House is only 5 or 6 years old and the thermostats were installed like that.
