I have a wildlife camera which I use around the garden for wildlife watching (mainly hedgehogs). It uses 8 AA batteries which I presume are in series as there is a 12v DC socket. The official use for the 12v socket is the manufacturers power pack, which just appears to be 8 more AA batteries in a chassis.

I think the NiMh AA rechargeables I've been using in it are past it as the camera won't trigger at night (not enough power/current to drive both the IR LEDs and record video at the same time).

The UK reseller recommends Energizer Ultimate Lithium AAs which they say are rated at 1.8v when new, rather than 1.2v for rechargeables. Downside is they are around £20 for a pack of 10.

I could use a 12v 2a DC mains adapter, though the reseller says this can induce a background buzzing noise in the video (I don't know why). Whilst that removes the problem, it does limit where I can put the camera.

Amazon sell a 12v 20,000mAh DC power pack/bank for £27:

Is there any reason why that wouldn't work as the power source? I'd just need to pop the pack into a waterproof container near the camera.

That'll work just fine. And far cheaper per mah than AAs (I've got a cam like yours and it runs for days and nights on end using Eneloop rechargeables). The mains charger will run at 60hz freq and if the cam doesn't have filtering you'll get lines on the pics and vids.

You cam might run on 6v but the 12v input goes through a simply voltage regulator. I have two of these cams and one of them you can put 4 OR 8 AAs in, with 8 doubling the duration, which means it runs on 6v. 12v is high for such a simple device particularly when lots of the boards run happily on 5v or there abouts.

Still, its all acedemic, the 12v input will work with any battery bank that is 12v and the correct polarity. Even a car battery would be fine.
