I’ve just been told that Macan “PDK” gearbox is a reworked Audi S-tronic box.
Is that correct?
If so it’s news to me!

You do understand that Porsche is owned by VAG and shares platforms with other VW and Audi models?
The DSG gearbox is the same, its just another code by the manufacturer.
My 4.2 V8D Cayenne has an Audi badged engine.

Didn't know it was from an Audi but yes, tiptronic due to needing a gearbox that can cope with the heavier vehicle weight & torque

And bizarrely, VW AG is owned by Porsche Automobil Holding SE and Porsche AG is owned by WV AG.

It was all due to Porsche managements attempt to take over VW and failing to get to the 75% of the shares required for full control while still owning over 50%, so they agreed to a mutual 'takeover'

My understanding is that regardless of where it’s from, the Macan has a dual clutch DSG-type auto box (hence the PDK branding), whereas the Cayenne has a traditional torque converter auto with higher towing limits. The Macan box certainly feels quite different to my Cayenne when I’ve had one as a loaner.

Yes my Cayenne has the Tiptronic box, I was refering to the OP that the PDK box in the Macan is technically a DSG/S-Tronic box (probably modified ratios for Porsche).

Yes I’m aware that the Macan is based on the Q5 but I honestly thought the gearbox was Porsche’s own.
My 718 has PDK stamped on the gearstick, the Macan doesn’t so I’ve answered my own question!!

Neither my718 nor my Macan has PDK on the gear lever so I don’t think that is any indication. If you look at the configurator the Macan is described as having a PDK gearbox ( not DSG) also the PDK box uses a wet clutch system whereas the DSG uses a dry clutch .You are aware I am sure that the PDK box - though a Porsche design going back to the 1980’s is manufactured by ZF.

DSG, S-tronic and PDK are the VW, Audi and Porsche terms for dual clutch transmission; they do not signify a particular manufacturer.

The PDK in the Macan is an optimised version of the Audi DL501 S-tronic which is manufactured at the VAG Kassel plant, not ZF.

Only the lowest power DSG - the DQ200 - is dry clutch. Compared to the DL501 in the Macan, it's a very different design with two output shafts to minimise the overall length of the unit. It was fitted to the Polo, A1 and possibly a Skoda. I'm fairly sure all the other DSG/S-tronic boxes are wet clutch, including the DL501 unit in the Macan.

I found the Macan gearbox to have what felt like clutch slip, very similar feel to a torque converter. All the comments on this put it down to throttle mapping rather than the gearbox, but anyone going from a 911 or 718 with a PDK into a Macan will feel very disappointed with the how the throttle/gearbox feels.

I have to disagree with this, I have a 718 Spyder and a Macan T and whilst the changes are much quicker in the Spyder I would not say that I am disappointed when I drive my Macan. The nature of the two vehicles are quite different and the gearbox “ mapping” simply reflects this in my view.
