Not a bad thing if true - the Cayenne meant Porsche could still make sports cars.

Yes, that's correct. McLaren Automotive Ltd. is set to produce high-end sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and sedans as part of a turnaround plan under its new ownership. Abu Dhabi's CYVN Holdings LLC, which took control of McLaren in December 2024, plans to merge the company with its UK electric-vehicle startup, Forseven Holdings.

Luxury SUVs have proven highly profitable for rivals like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Porsche, so McLaren’s shift aligns well with market trends.

The fact is McLaren is a business and businesses need to make money, and the only way sports car manufacturers in 2025 can be profitable appears to be selling big, overweight, ugly SUVs. If we want them to keep making cars like the 750S then they are going to have to follow Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Lotus etc into transitioning from a sports car / supercar manufacturer to an SUV manufacturer that also makes sports cars.

I don't like it (in fact I bloody hate it) but that's just the world we live in.

As long as it keeps the marque alive, who cares is my view, everything is going to be hybrid so I can't see them releasing anything that's going to appeal to me anyway.

I might be tempted one day in the future when second hand ones become affordable.

I know we're supposed to hate them, but as an overall car the ancient Cayenne I had was brilliant. I owned it for about 10 years (having only intended to own it for 6 months to fulfill a specific purpose) - and I still miss it. It was comfortable, could fit a huge amount in it and was far more fun than it should have been if you were in the mood.

Not sure McLaren has enough brand cachet with those that don’t care about how it drives and just want the brand name like the majority of those buying “performance SUV”s (an oxymoron if I ever heard one..)
