Insurance for large fleet of cars
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm wondering for those with many nice cars, who do you insure with?
I have a friend in the US with 10+ cars and he has them on a special exhibition type insurance where each car can only be driven 3k miles per year (but no other restrictions). I'm wondering if there is anything similar here?
For instance who would Harry Metcalfe or Shmee insure with?
I can't imagine they're going around typing the details of every car into moneysupermarket one by one, that would be impractical to keep on top of and too expensive.
I don't have this problem yet, but I will soon.
Thanks!

Footman James provide cover for a similar number of cars for me. Their service makes things easy for me. I cannot imagine going back to a company like Admiral who tried to refuse payment when my car was stolen. They paid eventually, but it took 6 months to get a payment out of them.
I live in the country but stay in London during the week for work. Footman James reflect this in my policy, so I don't risk being £50k out of pocket gain with a company like Admiral. The broker when my classic 911 was stolen was Adrian Flux and they told me that I had to deal with the insurance company without their help.
In conclusion, I have found that I get what I pay for. Saving a few hundred pounds can cost tens of thousands when it comes to insurance cover.

That's great, thanks everyone, I'll have talk to some of these when the time comes.
Out of interest, for those with many cars, how do you deal with MOTing them? Mobile MOTing doesn't seem to be a thing, do you hire someone to come and drive your cars to an MOT centre or do you spend 10 days doing that yourself?

At what level (quantity and value) of vehicles does it make sense to use the likes of Chubb and Footman James? I have three cars with a combined value of around £100k and will add a fourth next year. I've always assumed that I'm more of an Admiral rather than Footman James-type customer.
Does it only make sense to use the FJs where the fleet value is much high and you also wrap it in with other personal insurances (building, contents etc)?

Chubb.., most expensive but no quibble, wouldn’t use anyone else for a car collection. Forget Admiral. Like always you only know how good they are when you claim.
Zzzzz.............Yep, and I did claim with Admiral - they paid very fairly (if anything a tad too generously) and I replaced the car with the same model - from a dealer - without adding a penny.
Family member owns both a garage (car sales business) and has a large personal fleet of stuff locked away too, his trade policy for the garage covers both business and social inc all his personal vehicles. He's been with them for years and we're in NI, so not sure if that makes a difference or if trade policies in general mainland UK offer the same.

Then your claim must have been before 2023. Hmm, seems your only choice was Admiral…Yep, and I did claim with Admiral - they paid very fairly (if anything a tad too generously) and I replaced the car with the same model - from a dealer - without adding a penny.
As that post says - until 2019 I had "posh" insurance, but when I bought the McLaren they wouldn't cover it because I couldn't garage it. So I switched to Admiral. And yes - my claim was at the end of August 2022. So what?

Take them yourself - at least then you'll drive all of them at least once a year Out of interest, for those with many cars, how do you deal with MOTing them? +n for Aviva via Lockton. 7 cars with them. No mileage limits, no usage limits, agreed values, proper broker service, any driver over (ISTR 35), self and spouse fully comp on any car, no cost for additions within the year, cover for club trackdays + two outliers (UK only, sadly). Really quite reasonable given that we live in London and some of the cars are moderately expensive.
