My daughter bought a 2010 1.6 petrol astra from a garage for £3k with an AA warranty. It was great for 10 months and then the EML light came on. It was downhill from there, diagnostics pointed to various sensors which she spoke to AA about and they said parts such as sensors were not covered under warranty ..Arrgghh..

Anyway various other bits are going with it so she has decided to look for another maybe more reliable 5 door hatch

She will do less than 10k miles a year, would need to be 5 door and would prefer a boot of similar size to the astra.

If she could she would now prefer an auto but not essential

Shes 24 so no hot hatches due to insurance but also no slow coaches as she travel around the country

thanks

Toyota Yaris, or if that a bit too small, Toyota auris.

The 1.8 hybrid is bullet proof, as are most Toyotas where BMW haven't got their grubby mitts on it. It's no tesla when it comes to performance, but is miles ahead of Vauxhall, VW and anything french when it comes to reliability

Something from Korea. Hyundai i20/i30, Kia Rio/Ceed.

Not at all fashionable, very reliable and you'll get a newer car for any given budget than with more commonly recommended brands.

Is the eml light still on ? , my previous focus,s eml light was on , the trade in was reduced due to it , maybe take into account if you have a budget .

The 1.8 litre Civics are fairly bulletproof and good to drive.
If she isn't fussed about badges, Ssangyongs are a bargain, the depreciation is like a cliff so you get a lot of car for the money.

2016 / 75,000 mile Civics are £8000 whereas equivalent Ssangyong Tivolis are £4500
