Steering column bottom bearing housing replacement (H0090)

I need to remove the housing at the bottom of the steering column (on footwell bulkhead).

2 of the 5 bolts that hold the column in place have sheared off.

Access is difficult so drill out and easouts is going to be difficult.

Does anyone know how the housing is fixed to the bulkhead. Can it be drifted out from the wheel well or what ?

This is the housing (Thanks TVRSSW for allowing photo to be grabbed)

Hi Blaze Away, I have exactly the same problem.
Did you find out how to remove the mounting plate? Hopefully you can supply me with the answer,
Regards DickB

I'm surprised they have sheared off? I thought they were nuts and bolts through the bulkhead and housing?

This is a kit I have had made to replace the plastic bearing housing with an alluminiun one and comes complete with new bearing and five stainless steel bolts.

The whole bearing housing is bonded in position in the body fibreglass. I am part way through fixing it after consulting with a TVR racer and his mechanic.

1. Cut the fibreglass around the bearing housing approx 4 inch square.
2. Drill out the old sheared bolts
3. Insert new threads
4. Fit 2 aluminium sandwich plates either side approx 6 in square.
5 fit riv nuts on inside plate and bolt everything through the bulk head
Drill and tap new holes in the housing from wheel side. Bolt through the aluminium plate.

I have had a bunch of new bearing carriers that hold the bearing in place. Available with a bearing for £15 each.

Eye op has delayed progress but hope to get on it before Jun 1st
