Is this drummer technically excellent?
Discussion
Absolutely incredible drummer I love watching him, great talent and amazing theatre he manages to get into a drum cover.
Very, very technical though, perhaps a little bit too perfect? https://youtu.be/k82IXzToF4I?t=686

He's about as technically excellent as it's possible to be for the style of music he plays. Not sure about how tasteful he is or how much feel he has, but technically he's up there with the best. Also not sure how good he is at polyrhythmic stuff (Johnny Mathar/Yoni Madar is the master of this) or how he'd cope with playing other genres.

Technically excellent,
For the genre, certainly as good as Nick Menza in his prime.
However, I recall Rick Beato interviewing Bernard Purdie where BP recounted his recording sessions for Steely Dan. Purdie would pitch up to the studio with no idea what tune or style he'd be asked to play. He'd listen to the tune fleshed out by Fagan & Becker, then record one - maybe two - takes for the drum part. He'd then get up and walk away saying, 'Right. You guys can do another 38 takes for this tune, but I'm tellin' ya you'll use either of those first two from me.'.
Class.

I really hate the mid-gig drum solo, not seen one recently though. Is it going away?
The guy's OK as far as my ignorant eyes can tell, I like his spinning in midair drumsticks trick.
You mean like Grand Funk Railroad's TNUC for example. The guy's OK as far as my ignorant eyes can tell, I like his spinning in midair drumsticks trick.

Not my usual style of music, but the energy is impressive.
Yea, technically out of this world and I enjoy his Instagram vids.
But, I don’t get much feel from his playing. Perhaps it’s the sound of his kit setup, it sounds really flat and compressed, and each drum sounds just decay too quickly. There’s no vibrancy. In the video posted above the Dire Straits opening, just doesn’t sound anywhere near as exciting as the original. Visually the energy is there, sound wise, the energy has been lost.

Great drumming, not sure about drummer.
I'd always thought a drummer should punctuate the song from time to time, complementing everything else, this chap just dominates it.
(and I say this as a life long fan, his drumming is a bit Steve Harris of Iron Maiden bass)
I think this is a good idea of drums and bass working perfectly - to me anyway!!

Both. I look upon him as the drumming equivalent of the Harlem Globe Trotters. It's a bit of a circus act to me but then I'm not into his style of music.
Sums up my feeling, but then again (not having seen/heard him with a band on a genuine track) that seems to be the point of the video - It's a showcase of his drumming, not a genuine track he's recorded with a band.M

Hard to say if there is any feel in there at all, or how it would work with a live band, and is he listening to a click track.
That incessant kick racket makes it unlistenable too.
Al Jackson Jr. he ain’t, or at least he can’t demonstrate that playing in a speed style.
These two lines sum it up for me perfectly. That incessant kick racket makes it unlistenable too.

Any Pat Garvey fans here?
I saw Ozric Tentacles last night in Newcastle and his drumming blew me away - such power, precision, and really unsual time signatures. He never stopped over 1:45, the guy is a beast.
I saw them twice during the Generator John period, and each time the whole band's stamina was intense but the work-out John had nearly made me give up drumming.I saw Ozric Tentacles last night in Newcastle and his drumming blew me away - such power, precision, and really unsual time signatures.
