Occasionally in life you reach a major goal: acquire a qualification, get a new job, etc. However, in between the big successes there can be micro-achievements. I have been studying Portuguese for a few months in preparation for a holiday and the day before I watched my first film in Portuguese (admittedly with Portuguese subtitles) and pretty much understood it. Ok it was a Brazilian, modern take on Sleeping Beauty aimed at teenage girls and not the most complex dialogue ever (!) but it was still a challenge. That is what I like about learning languages: you can see that you are making progress.

So what little successes have you had recently?

Today was the first Saturday I got out of bed this year when my alarm went off at 8am, I usually turn it off and end up in bed till 10am and then feel like I’ve wasted the day and that the weekend is rapidly running out

It was great, sun was shining, I used the time to have a coffee and wash the car and get ready for the day all before I would normally be out of bed

Thank god we’ve almost seen the back of winter and life becomes worth living again

Replaced my failed EV charger.

Was nervous before, was worried about CT clamps and other complications.

When it arrived, the installation guide was straightforward and the process was like wiring a big plug.

Small victory.

I really can’t remember the last time I got up at 10 am. I think it must have been decades. I am used to getting up early and even when I don’t need to get up I just can’t seem to stay in bed. I think today it was 6:50, which for me is late!

I hate it about myself, I just love being cosy in the sheets

Say you have to play a solo over a major chord progression (say C / Am / F / G or variations thereof), you can play the minor pentatonic scale of the 6th degree of the key and it will sound perfect. So, from the above example, the chord progression is in C major and you solo using A minor pentatonic. Similarly, if a tune is in F major, you could solo using D minor pentatonic.

Coincidentally discovered this a couple of hours ago.

I was up at 8:00 - which was made worse by the decorating (which I fricking hate!)

Needs some finessing but I’m happy with that small win smile

Not today, but yesterday I had a delivery of a new bandsaw, I managed to put it together and stand it up, and put it on its casters/mobile base, it does weigh 120kg and I got it all going including aligning the blade, the table and the bearings, all this without swearing at it or losing any blood. The wife was quite impressed.

I sometimes use the Norwegian phrase “Oppe og ikke gråter”, which basically translates to “Upright and not crying”. A definite win.

My wife and I play a game every few days when making the hot drinks of ‘throw the tea bag into the cup from 3 meters away.

We get three goes each.

I haven’t won for a few weeks, but did yesterday first time. That was my small win.

Our patio door handle would no longer pull upwards to lock the door, its a Fuhr multipoint lock, I was going to buy a new gearbox for it.

Stripped it down yesterday afternoon and oiled all the parts... its now working like a dream!

On the other hand though our extractor fan stopped working , capacitor burnt out, searched the part number on ebay and bought a replacement, it turned up its got all the same numbers on it but its twice the size, the extractor now works but it only works for about a minute then turns off.

After a frustrating and boring week at work, having done no cello practice at all, I played an entirely new piece in my lesson yesterday and did it well enough for a sticker.

I should point out that while I'll be 50 next week, my cello teacher mostly has small children as her pupils, so everyone gets a sticker book. Mine is pirates.

Managed to drop the wife off at church and get back before they close all the roads for a half marathon they’ve got going on today.

She’ll have to walk back mind…

My small win today is reading this and being thankful that you reminded me too. Thank you!
