I took delivery of a new Hyundai Ioniq 5N back at the start of January. I'd kept an eye on it since it was announced; I'm a fan of the 'future retro' aesthetic of the standard Ioniq 5, and the N take things to another level in my opinion. I like the 'hothatch +' look too; the styling of a hot hatch with the practicality of a larger vehicle was something that appealed. My previous car was a Mk.7 Fiesta ST, so it's quite a change from that.

I arranged a test drive as soon as it was made available, and despite having a very timid drive about, I was given free reign to drive wherever I wanted as there were no further bookings that day. Bit boring, but I basically did my work commute, as it's a decent enough distance with a mix of local roads, A&B roads and some motorway, so I thought that was a decent all round test. The car felt great right away; very easy to drive, comfortable, doesn't feel large when you're driving it and very responsive due to being an EV.

Took delivery on a frosty morning on the 3rd of Jan, the vehicle had 10 miles on it and it's my first new car. Always exciting to get a new car (not that I've had loads), but there's something different about getting a vehicle no-one else has really driven. After a pretty quick handover, and some comedy left foot braking (I have learned my lesson - it's my first auto), it got parked up and charged.

Out with the old, in with the new.

On Charge

So, had it a couple of months now and what are my thoughts? I love it. It's pretty much everything I could need in a car (and more tbh), all the while being a practical daily. The Jekyll and Hyde nature is incredible; Eco mode turn it into a sedate (too sedate tbh) pootle wagon. Gentle acceleration, soft(ish) suspension and an all round calm aura, ideal for the times you just want to get somewhere as lazily as possible.

Push of a button; full on bonkers. I've never owned a powerful ICE car, so maybe the transition is a bit more extreme, but it's just like a rollercoaster (think Stealth at Thorpe Park) as the instantaneous nature of the EV mixed with AWD means it just grips and goes.

I took it out for a half decent drive recently; nothing mental, just a nice drive about for a couple of hours on my own. Again, it's just nice to drive. Has all the power I could certainly need (obviously more than I need!), instant response to the accelerator. Handles well; as above, it feels smaller that it actually is when it's in motion, which I got to test a little more on some A and B roads. Grip is just never ending, so you can maintain a decent pace through a corner and it never seemed to start stepping out. It kinda feels like a bigger version of my Fiesta in some ways, although obviously everything dialed up an awful lot.

Things I don't like? Not much really. Even the safety systems I don't mind, as they're not intrusive and can always be silenced or turned off quite easily. The lane keep assist can be a bit of a niggle on tighter roads, as it sometimes give you a little nudge when you know you're in a perfectly fine position, but again, I just turn it off if I know I'm going down that sort of road. It's never got in the way of driving though, as it's just a subtle nudge as opposed to it grabbing the wheel, which I have heard can happen with some older systems.

That and the fact that the rear end attracts dirt like nothing else. It's insane to me that the earlier Ioniq's have no rear wiper. Christ knows how you saw out the back of it after driving for 10 minutes in anything but blaring sunshine biglaugh

Anyway, not entirely sure anyone is interested in any of this, but I thought if nothing else I can post this as a reminder of things once I've had it a few years, so excuse any rambling!

The performance is great but as an Ioniq5 owner of 3.5 years I’d have bought one by now but the fluorescent red bits put me off - it’s a bit like selling a car which has a very loud exhaust from stock with no options to delete the exhaust noise

That looks lovely, Enjoy cool

I'm seeing more of these around locally which is great, I have a normal AWD Ioniq 5, and love it, one of these would be a perfect replacement when the time comes, love the duel nature of it.

Your right about the lack of wiper with the earlier ones, with the bad spell of weather we had, it was constantly dirty.

Our company salary sacrifice scheme is tempting me again and I’m torn between this, Tesla M3 and MG-4. Think I need some drives as they all have very positive reviews!

Ah, as you can tell from the Fiesta, I'm quite a big fan of the orange (sorry, being pedantic biglaugh) trim on the 5N!

Cheers! I'm still yet to see an N locally, but yesterday seemed like an Ioniq 5 rally or something, saw 3 or 4 of them in the space of about 10 minutes. I've only ever seen them quite rarely around here, so it was strange to see quite a few in so little time. I can't imagine not having a wiper, nightmare!

I would definitely recommend a test drive if you can get one. I think that while all 3 of those cars are broadly similar, I reckon they're a lot different to drive than one another.

Good in my opinion. The Fiesta is/was known to be a bit crashy sometimes, so bear in mind I'm coming from that. I never really found it an issue to be honest unless I hit something significant, which I obviously tried to avoid!

I find the standard suspension is well damped on the 5N, it soaks up the general lumps and bumps out on the network, but isn't floaty or bouncy as a result. Still offers adequate grip and body roll is minimal. Might be a bit more pronounced if you were pushing it, but for general driving, it's not particularly apparent. I tend to drive in normal suspension mode for the most part and it glides along very nicely. Considering the wheel size and the low profile tyres, I think it's pretty decently set up.

Sport suspension stiffens things up a bit, more akin to the Fiesta but not as harsh; again, I think the damping is quite well set.

I've not tried the sport + suspension yet, as most reviews say it's basically track suspension and too stiff to be comfortable. Next time I go out for a half decent drive, I'll give it a go and will report back. If I remember that is.

That is lovely; think they're a superb car and love the looks of them too... I've been fortunate to have been out in one of these and the pull is just mental...

My cousins Lotus Eletra is crazy; but that's a big bus compared to this!

And re the rear end (glass) get some of this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Angelwax-Sealant-Ultimate...

It works superbly and I've used it on both our F31 and my E81 and it really helps to keep the glass clearer

Cool car, won’t replace my ICE but definitely would consider to replace the family EV. Colleague has one, he only get 10% overnight using the 3 pin, he’s waiting for a fast charger install, but I’m guessing it’s more down to the local grid as to why our Tesla gets 40%.

Met my first one today skirting worcester south. Looked great and the pick up from mid roundabout was great. I manged to catch up finally in my c40 due to traffic (i had to manage my right foot as only had 30 mile of range anxiety buffer) as I wanted see the body roll difference and they were driving it as it was built.

Defo jelly and looked great

I might give that a go, though I recently got some of the Soft99 Glaco stuff, so hopefully that does the job!

Never knew these existed but those figures are insane. I had to look twice at the price tag mind. That is some strong money for a Hyundai!

Aaht and abaaht earlier today and went to a newly opened charging services; good set up, loads of chargers and space between charging points. First time using any rapid charging and was taking on the full 160kW. Grabbed a coffee, took some photos and faffed for a few minutes and went from about 30% to 80%, so I can see this being easily done in other service stations without feeling like you're hanging around needlessly.

I've seen one where those bits are wrapped. Wouldn't cost much at all.
