Reading questions
Discussion
No, not "reading questions" but questions about Reading Berks... I assume this is the correct regional forum?
I'll be staying in Reading for a couple of weeks, arriving on Friday.
On my own and with a reasonable amount of free time so looking for a few things to do.
Are there any recommended pubs around? (My "budget" hotel is near "The Museum of English Rural Life")
Where would I find a typical English "country pub" near Reading?
Any live music venues?
Any areas to avoid??
I will have a hire car so can go further afield.
Cheers

First bit of advice - get as far away from Reading as possible!
We live in Sonning Common, North of the river in Oxfordshire so know our part quite well.
Places to go in terms of country pubs:
Red Lion at Rotherfield Peppard
Bottle and Glass at Binfield Heath
Cherry Tree Inn at Stoke Row
Henley on Thames and Marlow are lovely
Shout if we can help with anything in particular.

I'm doing this trip on a budget as we were in England and France for 5 weeks in October last year and WAY overspent! Hence staying in a cheap hotel as near as I could get to my brother (near Camberley) as I'm coming for my nephew's wedding.
I'll check out those pubs thanks! I stayed with a cousin years ago who had a beautiful house in Marlow Bottom, they now live in Florida unfortunately!

If the weather is nice, visit Henley, Stag and Huntsman in Hambledon is one of the best country pubs anywhere. Or Oxford and hire a punt.I'll be staying in Reading for a couple of weeks, arriving on Friday.

If you want a very, very, very traditional country pub near Reading, it's the Bell Inn at Aldworth. The food menu is limited (but good for what it is).I'll be staying in Reading for a couple of weeks, arriving on Friday.

Sweeney & Todd's in the town centre is a Reading landmark (beer and excellent pies), but check opening hours.
You can see a full size Victorian replica of the Bayeaux Tapestry in the Museum ! We've got it all, honestly

I’m sitting in the Red Lion as we speak!
Walk from home to here and back. Lovely countryside and fine ale.
Across the common or through the woods? ?? Walk from home to here and back. Lovely countryside and fine ale.

Red Lion much improved since refurb - but overpriced IMHO.
Bird in Hand (new management) worth a go, Hare and Hounds, New Inn, Unicorn (not sure if Greyhound has reopened). Haven’t been to The Butchers Arms for ages and has changed management so can’t comment on how good/bad/i different it is these days - plenty to choose from!
I’m a through the woods chap; would love to have the folding to simply stroll across the common! That said, we are still in a lovely area.
Red Lion is our ‘local’. More for drinks than eating but Sunday roast is a similar price to most places.
Greyhound not open. Hope it does again as very convenient and a nice building. Over £100,000 in rent before anything else so an expensive business.

One (of MANY) things I love about coming to England, everything seems so much more affordable than here! (Apart from London) I'd wager that your "overpriced" will seem quite reasonable to me, despite the exchange rate!Red Lion much improved since refurb - but overpriced IMHO...
Just reread that and it sounds like I'm being a tosser... (as in "I'm considerably richer than yew"

There's a couple of good 'proper' pubs in Reading which are worth a visit:
Nags Head - on the Oxford road so you get to experience a few of the 'delights' down there. Doesn't do food but the beer selection is great.
Fox and Hounds - Caversham, fairly nice walk there from the town and does good pizzas.
Right next to MERL is the Dairy, which is a university run bar/pub but open to everyone - good beer and much cheaper than anywhere else in town. (They also run Park House which is in the other bit of the university grounds).
The only hotel I can think of near there is the Best Western - if it's that one then you're also really near to KungFu kitchen which is one of (if not the) best Chinese restaurants in Reading. They have 2 restaurants on the same strip of shops, one's a more traditional Chinese type place - but still pretty authentic. The other is hot pot/dim sum. Both are amazing.

Yep that's the one, on Christchurch Rd. Definitely a "budget" hotel but it looks like it will suit my purpose, and I have a room with kitchenette so I don't have to eat out every meal, and will also be running my business (invoicing, wages etc) from there while I'm away. I've booked it for 2 weeks straight even though I'll be away a few days one weekend.Nags Head - on the Oxford road so you get to experience a few of the 'delights' down there. Ah yeah you'll be fine! Reading is a bit of a weird place.. the centre is suffering from the same issues as most towns in the UK, with shops closing and a bit of a shabby feel to it. Unlike a lot of other places though there is a decent amount of food/drink places which are way to good to be in a place like this Appreciate the tips!

Good to know there are a few other local PHers. I’m along the Stoke Row Road. I came on here as I’d passed a convoy of interesting stuff driving towards Gallowstree Common and thought I’d missed out.Red Lion is our ‘local’. The Red Lion and Unicorn are our locals really. I’ve never set foot in the Greyhound despite it being the closest pub to me.
