Bit of a techie one for the overclockers.

I have an AMD 9700X system and I accidently bought Intel XMP RAM instead of AMD EXPO. The maximum speed the system should run at under EXPO is DDR5-6400 to work with my CPU. I bought a 6600 32-39-39-76 kit because it actually had better latency than the 6400 kit I was looking at so my logic was I could simply reduce the speed to 6400. I didn't appreciate the significance of XMP and EXPO profiles at the time.

I've since spotted a better set from a different brand that is 6400 30-39-39-102 with AMD EXPO profile. I have tweaked my original set to run at 6400 30-39-39-76 (matching both speed and latency).

As I've got my RAM running the same speed and latency as the second set I've found for sale, is there any benefit to me exchanging for the second set? They are the same price, but if I keep my set it would be running outside of its advertised specification.

I don’t think there is any point in changing the RAM unless you have stability problems. Even if you are just change the latency back to 32, I doubt you’ll notice any difference.

Yes I think you're right, I won't notice any difference, although from what I have read, my CPU responds better to faster RAM than AMD x3d or Intel CPUs do.

It's more the annoyance at having bought and fitted the wrong set vs the hassle of returning what is technically now used, and that the new RAM would take about 10 days to get here from the USA.

No, not much point at all. If you want to eek a little bit more speed out of the system change the FCLK in the bios to 2200 which will have a decent effect on latency, that's if it's not already set at that.

I presume the 6600mhz XMP profile didn't work when you tried to use it? I would expect that as 6600 at 1:1 mclk:uclk speed is asking a bit much.

Thanks, I'll check the FCLK. Correct, 6600 didn't work with 1:1 mclk:uclk. It did with 1:2.

I haven't had a PC that I can overclock for about 10 years, and it's quite fun learning about it again. Lots of youtube videos go for best performance, but I only want to do a few mild tweaks so as not to needlessly stress the system. I'm hoping it will last for a while and at the moment I'm stuck with using it with my old RTX 2080 until graphics card prices hopefully reduce when the supplies have stabilised.

In my experience 1:2 isn’t really “worth” it until you’re at around 7800+mhz on the RAM (if your board is capable), 6400mhz is a sweet spot for 1:1.

If you want to dig a little deeper with OC ram/CPU for AMD, look into project HYDRA, it’s a few quid via Patreon but makes finding safe limits relatively easy.

I'll take a look, thanks.
