At what age do you become exempt from being called up for national conscription, and be eligible for "Dads Army" instead...

Just wondering. If I need to start sharpening any garden tools. Yet.

My great grandfather was called up in WW1 at 37 to serve in one of the Labour Companies. Uniformed and armed they were intended to be away from the front lines doing manual work but the front lines often overtook them.

Pitch forks and hoes may be a Good Idea.

If you are French, then a nice sharp spade may help as well.

During WW2 it was initially between the ages of 18 and 41. After December 1941 this was increased so that anyone under the age of 51 could be called up for military service.

I am 51 so suspect I’ll just have to sit this one out on the touchline with the half-time oranges and the fat wheezy boys with a note from matron, while you young bloods link arms for the glorious final scrum down.

As I will say to all the people I work with "Good luck fighting those Russians lads!"

....or Russian with North Korean support - plus smirking in glee from a fat arrogant idiot who we stupidly thought was our ally, not Putin's.

I suspect the answer is “it varies depending on how bad it gets”

See 1944 old meat and fresh greens for details.

Yep, at the end, Germany were conscripting any able bodied male (and even some less than abled) and I’ve no doubt that if our backs were well and truly against the wall, something similar would happen here.

Plus there’s a lot that us old farts can do that doesn’t involve manning the trenches so if the st does hit the fan, expect to a call up to drive an ambulance or something.

From my background...I see myself more like

Joan Le Mesurier, sergeant Wilson type although I've never worked in a bank . And my present employment I have held the hide and seek award for 36 years . Any serious work and no one can find me.

So due to my age it's Dads Army for me (57 next)

I'm more concerned of who we going to be fighting... someone on here said the only difference between Russians and Americans was the size of their TVs.

I think it's the size of their TVs - and their egos.
.
Don't forget with equal rights we should have far more female help next time, not just in arnament factories etc.

Don't worry with the average fitness of the average British male of any age a war would be over in a week or less.

With the current state of this country I suspect that those that are too old to be conscripted would make a far more effective fighting force than those that are in the correct age band. In fact I would worry that many of those who are of 'fighting age' wouldn't be fighting for us at all.

I agree the youth of today everything is just to hard .. when you see some of the footage from the D day landings and try and imagine the woke folk doing anything similar is impossible.

You'd still be able to aim a mortar somebody else chucking the shell in.

Also war has moved on on rapidly , look at the rise of drones , somebody needs to be flying them and more importantly building them up .
