Hi

Son just got through to the final round of a job he really wanted and was rejected after interview

Told he came across really well but the reason he didnt get it was because he didnt ask for the questions in advance

Is this a thing?
And if so how do you know which jobs will think youre a genius for asking and which will throw you in the bin for being cheeky?

Cheers - I honestly dont know how to advise him

It is a thing but, to be honest, if they were available then EVERY candidate should have been given them automatically and not just those who asked. Otherwise the candidates aren't being scored fairly and it makes the process a little pointless.

Who would want to work for such a petty organisation?

This. I’ve never asked for interview questions and I wouldn’t provide them. I want to see how people reply and their thought process, they don’t have to be “right” in our part of the business.

I DO expect the candidate to have done a reasonable level of research on our company and market from public domain data (read recent press releases, annual report, etc)

Maybe they meant he would've given better answers if he'd asked for the questions in advance.

I always ask if I'm having an interview (but don't always get) and will provide to all candidates if recruiting, usually a day or 2 before interview.

This gives the candidate thinking time to match their best capability examples with the specific questions. We're not testing their memory or recall skills so I'd rather hear about the best things a person has done that actually answers the question.

Thank you for the invite to the final round of interviews, could you let me know the format, who will attend and if there are any areas you’d like to specially cover?

Sounds a bit forced. I do like to see people ask questions in / when given the chance at interview, but I've never requested any in advance or been asked to provide any.

In 35 years of employment, including being a manager leading recruitment interviews, I've never heard of candidates asking in advance for the interview questions, or being expected to ask for them. Though maybe it varies from sector to sector.

Yep, that's an excuse.

He was rejected because he wasn't a mind reader and should have asked for questions.

I still have no idea why companies (Hiring managers / HR) cannot just be honest with their reason for choosing someone over another and give useful feedback to people.
