Some of you may know my thread on here, the big bangle booty 635D which is the previous generation to this one! That's just sailed off with it's new owner, and has been replaced with a thoroughly predictable 640D.

I always really loved these when they came out, but they were never in budget! After a few years with the old 635D I started browsing and hadn't realised that they'd fallen into my reach.

The search started for either a Coupe or the swoopy Gran Coupe. The must haves - ULEZ, Heads up display. Preference was given for Harmon Kardon and the bigger 20" wheels. Enter this one smile It's got about 60k on the clock, is a gran coupe and has a very brown interior.

Driving impressions after 2 weeks, it's very long, very comfortable but probably not as much of a drivers car as the outgoing E63 635D. Mind you, the old car had a remap and this is totally standard. Nothing to report yet, but I'll keep a running thread on the costs of running one and doing about 20k a year in here :P The only blemish is a little bit of damage on the bumper from a kid riding into it on an E Scooter which is annoying, and I'll probably get it fixed after winter is done.

That's a really good looking car. Love the interior.

Really like these and keep browsing a mix of 320D/330D/520D/530D/640D's....

The size of it and the fact it might be a bit of a barge means I'm leaning towards something a bit smaller/sportier for now.

I like the idea of having a decent amount of effortless torque though and the Gran Coupé is a very handsome machine. Any MPG figures yet?

That is lovely; always loved the GC styling... As said before; a 640i GC would be a superb car and one that's still on my radar smile

Sorry to ask; is that a dent/crease on the bonnet? Can see it in both pictures

Looks great in Silver OP and I love a non-black interior so the Brown is a thumbup from me also.

My eyes were drawn to that also, nothing a PDR man can't pop out in the time it takes to make him a coffeecoffee

Cheers.

I think the brown leather is the best colour for the 6 series. Looks lovely. Enjoy.

Thanks all, I'm very chuffed!

There is a little dint to the bonnet too actually, which I don't think I'd noticed before - I think part of the same saga with the bumper, and the child on an E-Scooter. I'm keen to get it all sorted at a body shop soon so it's bang on.

MPG wise in genuine mixed use, it's doing 40.9 after about 1000 miles. It'll do close to 50mpg if you're just sat on the motorway, there's a big jump from the 635D which it's partly new tec but mostly gearing. At 80mph the 635D was at 2200rpm, this is at 1800rpm - 6 speed Vs 8 speed for you I suppose.

Some other short term things to tackle, I want to check on the infamous yellow grommet which can turn the cabin into a pool. No signs of it, but my last car greeted me with a puddle which was a pain.

Congratulations. The 640d GC is a superb car. One of the best looking BMWs in my eyes. The performance / economy mix is quite spectacular. Love the interior of yours.

After 3 company 5 series I opted out and bought my 6 in 2020. Always loved the look of them.

4.5 years and 60k miles on I’m still loving it. 44mpg overall and just scheduled servicing to run.

One of the greatest modern BMW designs, that engine was excellent and the seating position really made it feel like a GT. Enjoy, that's a very clean example, and a lovely combo. I still pine after mine, and the 8 series isn't a patch IMO.

Lovely cars, I miss mine.

I was unlucky with mine as it dropped a big end bearing at 98k miles but thankfully the BMW warranty paid out.

In the end I sold it when the insurance almost trebled for no reason.

Even my 81 yr old mum makes reference to that nice car that I had.

Minor updates, it's passed an MOT with a clean sheet smile

I've done a bit of fettling, the gasket for the reverse camera was beginning to fail. A new one was purchased for less than a tenner, and an hour of stripping the boot had everything out. The camera & badge moving mechanism is massive!

I've also had some quotes to get PDR on the bonnet, and respray the bumper to tidy the little marks. I'm gobsmacked, one quote was £1.2k and the other £4.5k!

Does anyone know a good (reasonable) body shop in Hampshire/Berkshire?

Further updates, firstly an annoying saga. I got a fine through the post for not paying a ULEZ fee! I went back to my checks before buying the car, and it was indeed ULEZ compliant being a EU6 diesel.

I think when I moved my private plate on, it confused their system and carried the ULEZ status over from my old 635D - annoying, and the burden of sorting it fell to me. I ended up having to get a Certificate of Conformance from BMW, then emailing that and my full V5 to TfL - who have now fixed it and it's ULEZ compliant again.

On a more exciting note, it's had a remap and I've got a paint guy booked in for the front bumper this month smile

IMO, a pretty car...

I'm so tempted by one of these.

I'm missing wafting about in a big BMW. My mileage per year is down to about 5000 since Covid. I'm not sure it would make sense to get a big diesel. Man maths is being activated.

You could always look at one of the petrol 640i's - they're powered by the N55 which seems like it's pretty reliable (not to be confused with the earlier N54 which could at times be needy).

From what I've read, the V8s are best to be avoided as they can be pretty rough going.

Thanks checking out 640is now.
