I've just had a look on auto trader and saw some nice examples (no mods, fsh, low owners, etc.) for £20k. Interested to see where prices go from here, with E92s seemingly bottomed out. What's everyone's take here?

They do seem good value, although I think I’d save slightly more and choose the original M2

Good value, but check insurance costs as I seem to recall that these are very pricey.

Good all rounder though, even quite economical

Somewhat of a bargain, they are a great looking car.

I am in the process of buying one of these cheap M4's.

Fully comp £600 which i thought was reasonable. I am 48 though with full NCB. Live in Essex, will be parked on driveway

Definitely a bargain atm!
Patiently waiting for a manual slightly higher mileage to pop up

Would love one of these but I'm not sure I'm brave enough for one without a BMW warranty.

I bought one for £25k. Traded in my 640i for one. 2015 non comp, probably over paid for it last year but it came with a full BMW history on 48k miles.

It’s now on 58k miles after 9 months in my ownership. Probably worth less than £20k now.

Under my ownership I completed ahead of schedule an oil change and an on schedule brake fluid change.

During the brake fluid change BMW gave me one of those reports with the videos they do. Diff was leaking so I got all 3 seals replaced for £1800 with Redish.

In all honestly I wish I never bothered. I always wanted a M car after making my way through various BMW models. I’m worried about it being stolen and other than a slip road acceleration blast I just drive it up and down the motorway at about 65mph…. Sure, it’s a great car but wasted on my driving requirements and I should’ve kept the 6 series.

Funnily enough my next door neighbour used to work for Porsche as a salesman and he bought an F82 M4 when one of his customers traded it against a 911. It looked lovely. He didn't keep it very long and when I asked him about it, he said that it was great at the A road acceleration blast but he also regretted buying it. Terrible MPG, far too expensive to maintain and not that comfortable on his A road commute. He's since changed jobs to work for BMW and now drives a more normal company car (330i).

I never really liked the F82 looks but the F80 does appeal. After looking at M3's, I did the head over heart thing and bought an F80 340i Shadow Edition. It's much better suited to my needs and a lot cheaper but every time I see an F80 M3, I still get that yearning. Now they can be had for sub £30k, I do still think about swapping.

I paid £31k for my Competition pack F82 a couple of years ago, albeit it had relatively low mileage (24k at time) and is an individual colour, Long Beach blue. Hopefully still worth in the high 20s as it has a very good spec.

I don't think they'll go far below £20k, they're still relatively new enough that I can't see them dropping into the E92 price range - obviously there will be exceptions like high mileage first-off-the-line cars.

They're not cheap to run or maintain so like anything else that starts to seem like a bargain, make sure it has extensive history and has been well looked after - and/or take out a warranty. That £20k car could still run up £10k in bills relatively quickly. Crank hub is the big thing to watch out for on these.

The F8x cars are good on fuel for their performance for me, and my old manual E92 M3 was lousy on fuel in comparison I thought. Both cars used as daily drivers in my hands.

I've ran mine for over 3 years now without a warranty(had it 4 years/covered 36k miles in it), but there is the obvious risk of doing that though of course.

I'd say he bought the wrong sort of car for A road commuting. It'll do it but it's a bit of a waste and a 330i does that job better for less money and cost to run.

I had an F30 340i for three years - a great car and a superb engine but like you an M was an itch I wanted to scratch, and recently swapped to an M2 (OG LCI). The different is enormous and I find myself just taking it out in a way that I never did with the 340i. It's thirstier, noisier, more in your face, will cost more to run and maintain and I just don't care. I haven't had a car that makes me grin like this since my Mk1 MR2.

I find the 340i's interesting, they seem to be quite rare on the ground. Youtube's algorithms threw up a stage 2 340i video a few weeks back and I was impressed by its pace. I went for the M car over a 340i/440i as I'm a sucker for swollen arches and more muscular M looks too, but if I was after a less aggressive fast road sleeper, a tuned 340i is bound to go well.

Superb engine no doubt and as a daily almost certainly a better all-round bet but it never had the poise and sense of occasion I was after. I wouldn’t blame anyone for buying one over an M though. Heart vs head and all that.

Yes and my insurance fluctuates, and it went up £200 for 2 years on the trot for example. I'm another one who thinks they are decent enough on fuel too, and mine is actually better on fuel than the E90 330i I had in comparison.

Mine has been the best car I've had as an all round performance car I think, and only the noise they make, and the quite harsh ride niggle me really about them in fairness.

Not really the F8* M cars are fine for any distance driving, why would you think otherwise?

As he bought a 330i and prefers that I’m not sure why you’re arguing with here.

No you referred to the car as the wrong sort of car for an A road, what makes you think that? Not the wrong car for him.

If you have no reasoning for the statement that's OK to admit.
