It's in the middle of the car and looks like it should be connected to the exhaust pipe which eventually runs down the drivers side of the car.

What's the name of this part and how much could I be looking at to get it replaced? Honda Jazz 09.

It is called the catalytic converter & should be connected to the rest of the exhaust.

I am guessing the car is suddenly extremely noisey.

It is a wee bit, aye. Have an appointment tomorrow so hopefully they can patch it up to calm down the noise and then we'll get it fixed/replaced in the week.

Has someone tried nicking it? Jazz cats were worth a lot not that long ago

I did think that but honestly don't know - it was in a full M&S car park so I doubt it. Knowing our history and treatment of cars it probably got corroded and split, we had exhaust troubles and bits falling off on a previous Jazz of a similar age.

Doesn`t look like that to me, no shiny buzz saw marks. Rust failure at the flange would be my assessment.

Either way, it`s Donald Ducked.

I agree it looks like it's rusted at a joint and sheared.

A garage may be able to reweld it crudely to get you out the immediate pinch, but such a repair won't last long.

Prepare for a hilarious quote if someone uses genuine Honda parts to price up the repair.

Also looks like the exhaust flow will now bypass the downstream O2 sensor, so don't be shocked if you get an engine warning light.

The flange is still present, could easily just need a new clamp and seal.

KwikFit (our local one is decent) thought it was too corroded to patched up, new parts fitted would be £770 and they didn’t seem particularly fussed at getting me booked in for it so it’s not like they were trying to fleece me. Reckoned a new cat and a new exhaust centrepiece.

Got another good local garage to try tomorrow, parts seem to be around £250 online but I might not be looking at exactly the right things.

No, that's about the right uplift in price for using Kwik Fit.

See what local/independent garages estimate.

Not too difficult a job if you have the time, tools & space to do it.

The flange has rotted to oblivion, the end of the cat that joins the exhaust is supposed to have a triangular flange with three studs like this:

Ah, thought I was looking at a 'V-band clamp' type connection.

Local garage, £550, sorted. Could maybe have got a bit cheaper by asking around but no way I would have done it myself.
